As much as you are not going to like this...I would expect NOTHING!!

Just as they will probably not pay a dime toward my night tinted glasses due to the halos and starbursts I have. Medicare just doesn't cover glasses. I wish we had better eye care insurance!!

Good luck though!! (As long as you aren't picky, go to Walmart...they have frames for like $19.95...and you can get a complete pair for about $60) (See my new reply above)

They didn’t cover anything for my husband’s new glasses after cataract surgery. We paid out of pocket, because the timing wasn’t right for our vision insurance to pay.

Medicare doesn't pay for eyeglasses, even after cararact surgery. That's why my sister bought hers from Wamart after her cataract surgery last year.

@SeaMaiden It is my understanding that Part B will cover a pair of glasses after cataract surgery. You need to use a Medicare provider.

Good news! I looked it up...looks like they do!! They pay for one pair after cataract surgery. Standard frames and you pay 20% of the approved cost. Since I have to have the night glasses...I guess that will apply to me also, since he wrote a prescription into them. We shall see!!

@SeaMaidenMedicare paid for a good portion of my new frames and lenses following my cataract surgery in 2016. Sorry, I do not remember the exact percentage and the dollar amount I paid would not help figure it out. Best wishes on your surgery and enjoy the bright colors of spring! The world is so colorful.

It has been over a year since I submitted my paperwork for glasses and have not received anything--no money nor a letter stating that they would not pay. Anyone who did, please tell me how you got yours. TIA

@SXMGirlMy paperwork for frames and lenses was submitted by both the Surgeon and the Optomotist. I probably signed my name to it, but didn't fill anything out per se. They took care of everything submitted to Medicare at the time. Talk with your health care providers. They both must be an approved provider to quality for this payment.

@BirkiLady, thanks for the info. I submitted the paperwork as my eye doctor had never been asked to do that before. I think that I will call Medicare and see if they can advise and I will also check with my surgeon. Thanks again!

I had my cataracts removed in November 2017 and Medicare paid $200 towards my new reading glasses. Check with your eye doctor. Good luck.

@SXMGirlAlso, check with whomever provided your frames and lenses. They also have to be an approved provider. Have a feeling that may be the problem. If you are getting your frames and lenses from a true professional (i.e. education in the field), he/she is probably approved. Many of those places are simply on-the-job trained . . . and probably not approved.

@BirkiLady, thanks for the info. My eye doctor is considered the best in our state and is the one that special cases, like me, are sent to. My surgeon is also considered the best, but I did not think to go to his office for the paperwork. I will make it a point to stop in there once our weather gets better. We have another storm predicted this week.

Traditional Medicare pays for one pair of glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery, subject to your Medicare Part B deductible and 20% copayment. If you have a Medicare supplement, your deductible and copayment might pick up what Medicare didn’t pay. It depends on what supplement you have.

The bad news is that you must get those glasses or contact lenses from a provider who is enrolled in and excepts Medicare. They will submit the claim for you. You do not submit your own Medicare claims. Sometimes a Medicare Provider who dispenses glasses is as rare as a hen with teeth.

I think they paid 100% for my DH's glasses after his cataract surgeries were done. We have an advantage plan.

Went to see about my glasses today...guess what? You have to have a correction of at least 50 ...which I'm sure you do for Medicare to pay. Mine are only -25...(of course). They quoted me $382 which is ridiculous. I'll go to Walmart and get them for under $100.
