Anyone Belong To LA Fitness?

I posted this originally in Community Chat, but it was recommended to post here.

The reason that I am asking is that one will be opening in my area within the next two months. They are starting to hire staff, and the classes that I have seen online are excellent. I grow more disenchanted with our YMCA as classes that I can take are being eliminated. The only thing that keeps me at the Y is my personal trainer, and training is not inexpensive.

The price of membership is less than half of what I now pay at the Y, but it appears that you sign up for one year at that price. I am even considering employment there since it is just a few miles from my home (same distance as the Y) and membership is then free.

If you belong or know someone who does, please let me know your/their opinions/likes or dislikes. Reviews that I have read online have been very good. TIA.

It took several months after I sent a letter saying I was leaving for LA Fitness as required by the to stop charging my credit card I made several calls re this but there was always a delay Finally my cc company called them and got action disputing the charges Several months later I got notice from a lawyer asking me to join a class action suit against LA Fitness By that time I no longer had proof of documentation the lawyer was askin for I did see some coverage in the media re the suit

Just wondering : Do you know for sure you can get hired there? In what capacity? I have a family member who belonged for a few years until his company opened their own gym in his office building.

I’ve been going to LA Fitness for the past 4 years and they are fine. I only go for the water aerobics 3 days a week. I have used the equipment at times but prefer the water aerobics. They keep it clean and I’ve never had a problem. I pay $179 a year. No extra fees.

@Love my grandkids, I am fairly certain that I could get hired as I am in very good physical shape for my age and I am a retired business instructor. Many of the businesses in our area have really started to hire older people because we have a large senior citizen population. LA Fitness is certainly looking at the competition and will realize that many retirees work out every day. The only job that I would want would be front desk.

LA Fitness has their own "certifications" that allow you to teach in any of their clubs.

They will always go with experienced instructors first. Class size is the key. You have to build your class and maintain the size or they will kick you to the curb.

I never understood that myself because if you are a member, who cares how many people are in the Zumba class. They have your membership money. That's what counts. But apparently they can't sell new memberships if the classes are empty. That's their story.

I used to belong to a community center and decided to join LA Fitness as a shorter drive. I really like it a lot and never looked back! All of the classes are included in the membership so a good value. Personal training is extra and they do push it but I only take the free classes. There are soe excellent instructors at our club. Once in a while a class may stall due to their inability to get a sub or a replacement but all in all I thing you will like it. Nicely designed, modern locker room and shower areas and a great pool.

Someone mentioned that they pay 179.00/yearly membership at LA Fitness. I pay 124.00 at 24 hour fitness, but prices at the clubs seem to be all over the place when you discuss it with club members. I'm thinking of joining LA Fitness also, how can I be assured you are getting the best price?

@SXMGirl Do you know that you got the best annual membership price?

@phoenixbrd, ours has not even opened yet. I understand it will be sometime in May or early June. The only thing that I have seen online is a $45 signup fee (which will probably be waived like every other club in our area) and then 24.99 a month for one year. That is 344.88 per year. My Y membership is about 1200 per year, which includes personal training and my trx class. They charge senior citizens a fee for trx but no one else--go figure that one out. I even get a discount because I was a state employee, but seniors actually pay more than my discount.

I am giving serious consideration to LA Fitness, but I think I will need to tour the facility and ask a lot of questions. I really like my personal trainer and would prefer to stay with her, but I really wonder about how much I am spending at the Y.

We are hoping that the Y sees that they will have serious competition once LA opens and possibly drop some fees. The Y keeps begging for everyone to donate funds for the free memberships to those who cannot afford.

I did one of the pre-opening sales which was no fee and $29.99 per month. I missed the $24.99 per month by one day.
