My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 79. The treatment was daily radiation for 3 months, then hormone shots every three months for 2 years. The radiation side effects were mostly incontinence. The hormone side effects seem to be more of a challenge. Mood swings, hot flashes, fatigue are an issue, BUT the treatment is working. He says he now understands what my mom went thru during menopause, so at least we can laugh about that!

Wishing you the best of luck!!

My sweetheart had aggressive prostate cancer and 15 months ago had the prostate removed. Now the PSA is 0.2 and the Oncologist recommends a combination of radiation with a form of hormone therapy that eliminates testestrone from the body to starve the cancer cells. Unfortunately, the side affects sound scary and he is leaning more towards just trying the radiation.

Question, is there anyone here who has experience with having hormone deprivation therapy ?

My dad had the same treatment but it was many years ago, I don't remember much except that he complained about the lack of testosterone and what it does to your body. He did remain cancer free afterwards though.

My husband had surgery 5 years ago for prostate cancer followed by 7 weeks of radiation. He now deals with chronic pain and damage to his colon from the radiation. I guess there is no easy answer.

I plan to stay with it for 5 years. I was afraid when I heard about the side effects too but really for many people, the side effects are well tolerated.

Best wishes and prayers for you and DH that treatment and healing goes well.

My father had prostate cancer a while back. He had radiation treatment and now has Eligard and Prolia injections every six months. The Eligard is a hormone suppressant, and the Prolia is because hormone suppression causes bone loss and the Prolia prevents that (I think that's how the urologist described what the Prolia was for). His prostate cancer has not returned, so I consider the treatment a success for him.

He has had no side effects from the injections that I'm aware of. I've been going to his urologist appts. with him for the last year and a half.

My husband had cancer of the lymph nodes and a mass in his neck found early in 2015. The treatment was aggressive with 35 daily radiation treatments and 6 weekly chemo sessions. He barely survived and had a feeding tube for 8 months and was hospitalized for the last 2 1/2 weeks of his treatment. A followup PET scan then showed questionable findings and he had a bilateral neck dissection and a pattern of lymph nodes removed from both sides of his neck. Serious surgery and he survived without another feeding tube and many months of swallow therapy and now eats most foods again. During a follow up PET scan in 2016 there were findings in his prostate and a biopsy confirmed cancer, but the non-aggressive type. He does not want any further invasive surgery, chemo and cannot have any more radiation. He had one hormone injection 12/16 and his PSA level stays low and he did not complain of any side effects. Each 3 month test has been good and due again next week for bloodwork and follow up appointment. Good luck to your husband with whatever he chooses. We live in a small town and his doctors have done great with my husband. It can be a long road and again, best wishes.
