@Bridgegal Lots of positive results and reasons to exercise, unfortunately losing weight isn't one of them. It is all about the food and not about the amount of time spent in a gym. Fortunately, focusing on restricting calories is also outdated (eat within reason, no need for restricting and deprivation). We need to look for nutrient density and satiety in the food we consume to satisfy hunger. There is no reason to be hungry when losing weight....lots of research and success. So your comment - exercise is excellent for health, but not critical for weight loss - is true. I've change my time commitment at the gym as a result of this knowledge. Wishing you much success in your weight loss!

The evidence is now clear: Exercise is excellent for health; it’s just not that important for weight loss. So don't expect to lose a lot of weight by ramping up physical activity alone.

From--- Apple News: https://www.vox.com/2018/1/3/16845438/exercise-weight-loss-myth-burn-calories

I need exercise for flexibility, maintaining muscle loss, lowering cholesterol, raising metabolism, increasing brain activity and lifting depression. I also love taking gratitude walks. Food intake affects my weight the most since I turned 50. I have to stay around 1300 calories a day or the pounds pack on. I'm over 5' but petite. Doc advised I manage intake working with this daily number. If I know I have a dinner event the next day, go down to 800 the day before. Darn. He's right.

There''s an adage that's been around the fitness world for decades - "You Can't Outtrain a Bad Diet".

We've known this for a long time. People just don't seem to want to know that they have to change what, and how much, they put in their mouths.

I started working with a guy last week who wants to lose 40 pounds. He told me he has no intention of changing his diet, which he tells me is "pretty healthy". I had to tell him that he isn't going to be losing much, ikf any, if he doesn't work on his diet.

We'll see if he wakes up!

So don't expect to lose a lot of weight by ramping up physical activity alone.

From--- Apple News: https://www.vox.com/2018/1/3/16845438/exercise-weight-loss-myth-burn-calories

@Bridgegal

Your 1st 5 words? Sorry, it is not clear! For some, maybe! For others like myself? I know and have known how to lose/gain and/or maintain my weight, for many decades now. Should I choose, or in much of the last 15 years, have "my way of exercising removed"? It has taken me the best part of that last 12 years to be able to do what I know works for me".

"it's just not that important for weight loss"? That is a general statement, and while it may be true for those that participated in a study, or who knows? Maybe just answered questions to, who knows who, taking a phone survey about their exercise routine. And we all know that "nobody exagerates when they tell others how hard they exercised that day", right?

The same formula does not work for everyone, that is what has been proven, but beat goes on with new this/new info (which to me is old news"?").

From my personal experience, that is bunk!! Exercise is of major importance to weight loss!! I know when I am not as physically active, I try to eat less and healthier but I still gain weight. When I am able to resume my workouts I always loose weight and inches. I first have to workout and be active which then decreases my desire to overeat so there is direct corelation to working out and being active and loosing weight!

After resolving some medical issues this summer I was able to ramp up my workouts and while not really changing my diet have lost 20 pounds.

With this cold weather, I haven't been able to walk with my dog since Christmas and I have noticed some t gain in both of us and we have eaten the same - even though I am still doing my regular workouts daily.

Without my workouts I would have to eat very little to just retain the same weight.

In the end though without working out and even if my weight remained the same, I would look heavier because the toning and muscle I have when working out takes many inches off.

Many doctors I have seen are amazed at how much I weigh since I am very muscular. Without being physically active I would go up 2 clothing sizes so maybe in a sense it's not about the weight loss or gain but the body size. No matter though because physical activity is definitely way more important than what you eat!!

Many hop on this misguided information to use as an excuse to not workout and probably have never really been physically active anyway!!

@Pook,

We have pretty much had the same experiences when it comes to exercise. For many that do so just for weight loss, but hate the thought of just having to do it, they quit when they reach their goal, and then what? They wonder why they have gained back the weight they lost!

That is why it is so important to try to find some type of exercise(anything that gets your body parts moving) that you might even enjoy doing, I have always found several of them, and when you enjoy it? You look forward to it rather than dread the thought of doing it, and that seldom lasts long.

My only different take than what you have said in this post is in regards to eating. While exercise is a very big factor, not only for physical fitness and health, food and what you eat is just as important. To me they are, at the very least, equal partners when it comes to health/physical fitness, and weight loss/gain and/or control.

I am convinced you know your body well, and that you know by the way you feel, where you are at when one of these 2 important factors are not present in your activities, and at the levels you prefer. Nice to reading a post written by your own personal experience. Studies/Polls/Tests, and just plain BS, will continue to be said and/or written, most I just shake my head and continue with what I know.

Best to you,
