Hyperparathyroidism

One of the blood tests that my internist ran came back with an elevated parathyroid hormone level.

I have been complaining for a while that I feel like I have been hit by a bus, I saw a Rhumetologist and diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 2 years ago, after reading the symptoms for parathyroid disease, I am wondering if the fibro diagnosed was incorrectly

I am seeing an Endocrinologist in mid Jan and until then I will be wondering what the heck is going on with me

If this is a true diagnosis it would explain so much of what is going on

At the time you were diagnosed with fibro did your doctor have your blood tested in an endocrine blood panel? That should have ruled out the HPT at that time.

No, the only blood work that was done was for Sjrogens, and nothing else as far as I know. I felt as if my care was haphazard which is why I started at square one with a new internist

I was diagnosed with scleroderma in '02. It's another AI disorder which can be difficult to diagnose. Fortunately some of my symptoms are exclusive to scleroderma so there was no doubt as to what was wrong with me and proper treatment was started right away....tg. I wish you the best @I am still oxox. I hope the doctors will help you feel better.

My calcium levels are normal, I have read this is not always an indicator, I am playing arm chair doctor right now ans will not know anything until my follow up with the Endocrinologist in mid Jan.

Yes but for at least the last 18 months I have complained that I have no energy and feel like I have been hit but a bus. I brought this up to the Rhmeotologist number of times and I never got an answer.

I feel like a dragged out and dragged down emotional mess.

I do agree with you. You should have been tested sooner.

But the Rhum won't know or care about that.

@I am still oxox my family is hper and I am hypo. They felt so bad they went to the ER ,where it was diagnosed

I think they felt like they were having a heart attack.

I have been dragging for months. My thyroid meds are keeping things in that area ok. The Dr ran a bunch of blood tests and found I am very vitamin deficient. I am on massive doses of B12 and D. I am getting better ,but it's slow

You might ask them to test your vitamin levels. If they do blood work on you , they can ask for them to be checked at the same time

I'm a fairly well-educated medical person. I spent my entire career in the field. Many of my close friends are doctors and practitioners. One rheumy friend of mine and I talk shop all of the time. She told me one time that she believes some if not many AI diseases can be triggered by low levels of certain vitamins, in particular D. She didn't quite know if the AI caused the low levels or if the AI was somehow a response to the low vitamin levels. This is all speculative but I found that very interesting. At the time I was diagnosed with scleroderma, my vitamin D and B12 levels were so low they were off the charts. So I think it's very important to have at least the D and B12 levels checked as a overall health indicator.

All the times I have checked my symptoms, this was in the list.

i feel that my doctors have always been narrow-minded, in the past, and have overlooked this possibility.

So many symptoms including fibromyalgia, CFS, and nothing in my regular blood tests. I’d like to get to a more final diagnosis to see what the underlying cause might be.

Also, my DD is starting to show symptoms just the same as mine (early 30’s)... so, I figure it’s for her benefit too.

My D and B levels were low, they are now normal" I am now on 5000 MG of D, I do not feel any healthier or stronger.

I can only speak for myself but for years I had chronic fatigue, chronic muscle and bone pain and I saw army of doctors who couldn't figure it all out. One did indeed suggest Fibro but I work in healthcare and I wasn't falling for that. I know that Fibro is usually a catch all diagnosis for "we just don't know what it is". I ended up seeing an endocrinologist for something entirely different, for a thyroid condition. Of course, he took a complete history and I broke down in tears as I explained to him what had been going on with me. He's the one who diagnosed my severe vitamin d deficiency and my hyperparathyroidism. It took a while, even with the diagnosis he had tinker the meds and there was a lot of testing but he got it under control. I think that if I'd gone down that Fibro path, I'd either be very sick today or dead.

lovestoteach, could the water in your area be causing this? Ask your Dr. Or find some way to test your water. Always makes me wonder when people are told to drink plenty of water, because I think NO ONES TAP WATER IS SAFE ANYMORE!!!!

I was diagnosed with this a few years ago. 3 of the 4 parathyroid glands "lit up" on a nuclear medicine scan. I had been admitted to the hospital because of severe dehydration, a UTI, elevated calcium and electrolytes that were abnormal.

I was seen by an Endocrinologist and an ENT. The ENT said that at my age (I was 60 at the time) he would not recommend removing them. My PCP keeps a close eye on my blood work. I will say, I have had a 12 year history of episodic kidney stones. Mostly, I keep myself well hydrated and a close check on my blood pressure.

I am not seeing the specialist until mid Jan.

I am just so sad that I feel so "sick" and energy- less.

My husband does not seem to comprehend what is going on, I have not told my Dad and will not until there is something conclusive.

I feel like I have wasted two years trying t get a diagnosis and each day I am falling deeper and deeper into an abyss of hopelessness.

My dear friend I am so sorry for you. Do you think it might be depression? I am only saying this because it sounds like they have tested you for other things

Depression can cause physical symptoms , my sister suffers from it, so I am a bit aware of how it can really make you feel sick

I hope the Dr can help you. Feeling ill is no joke
