I've had tinnitus (ringing in my ears) for many years. For anyone that has this, have you tried using a white noise machine at night? Does it help? I was thinking of buying one.

I have a mild case of tinnitus. Believe it or not I have a white noise machine running all the time in my house. I cannot deal with total silence. The ringing drives me up a wall. I have another machine in my bedroom, too.

I think it does. My white noise right now comes from a humidifier - it's actually pretty quiet, but the un-interruptedness of the sound is soothing. The tinnitus is not always a bother to my sleep, and sometimes I don't hear it at all, but that, and other "noises in the night" can keep me awake. There's also a white noise machine in the house, which, when played to the right "tune", masks annoying sounds very well. Ours is an old "Sharper Image" unit that has run like a champ for at least a decade. It can be used with or without a timer.

Sometimes I play a soothing Pandora radio station at a very low volume and I find that helpful, too.

I've had tinnitus for several years. I've never used a white noise machine but I do have TV or music on most of my waking hours. Falling asleep at night is usually the hardest time for me. I need to have the TV on until I feel like I'm going to drift off.

@Nicknack, you, and anyone else with this condition, has my complete sympathy! I usually fall asleep with the TV on turned very low. If I set the timer so that the TV goes off automatically in two hours I find I always wake up about five minutes after the TV goes off. But I can sleep fine as long as it's on.

Mine is very bad & I've had it so long that I don't remember what silence is like. I simply leave the radio on all night, can't sleep without it. Never tried a noise machine because I'm sensitive to other noises too.

@NickNack

I don’t have tinnitus to my knowledge, but I’ve never been able to relax or sleep in silence. If it’s quiet enough to hear a pin drop, I will hear the darned pin and it will wake me.

I’ve had white noise machines of one type or other, different brands, for at least 45 years. This was because besides being a light sleeper, I have as an adult always lived in apartment buildings or with a roommate and have had to deal with other peoples’ noise. I get cranky when noise is forced upon me that I didn’t initiate ;-)

Different machines may be designed for different purposes. Some of them don’t get loud enough for me, but depending on why you need it that may not matter to you. And the inexpensive ones can be just as effective.

I had one of the expensive solid state digital machines from either Brookstone or Sharper Image (they were similar) and mine died sooner than I thought it should for the cost, while I’ve had $30 machines last for 10 years. The one I currently have (and would buy another in a heartbeat) is about 5-6 years old, a Zohne by Marpac.

I’ve found that for me, I prefer white noise and only white noise - the waves crashing, brook babbling or birds chirping annoy me when trying to fall asleep. But if you wanted it on throughout the day for an issue like tinnitus, you might like the other sounds.

@Moonchilde The one I ordered from Amazon was $30 and was a Marpac Dohm basic white noise machine. Marpac makes one for $50, too, but the reviews were excellent on the $30 one. I'm glad to read that you prefer the white noise. I debated about the other sounds but thought the white noise would probably be what I would prefer.

@NickNack, the expensive one is often sold through audiologists. I’m thinking it’s the model they use for patients with serious issues that can’t be helped with the less expensive machines, as a last hope thing.

If you have a smartphone or a tablet, there are many white noise apps that only cost a few dollars, and at least one that lets you soundmix like the $115 model.

I can't function without white noise machines in every room. Also have tinnitus, and it can be very irritating at times. Very sensitive to other sounds as well, so the white noise really helps tune out distracting sounds. My favorite machine is called the Lectrofan. I prefer this one because they are much louder than the dohm (my second favorite machine). They have several white noise settings, as well as box fan sounds for those who like to sleep to the sound of a fan. I like being able to change the pitch of the white noise because that can really make a difference depending on what you are trying to tune out.

I hope your machine helps! If it doesn't, and it is a brand that plays sound on a repeating loop, try a different machine before giving up. Hoping for peaceful nights in your future

I've had it for a while, but it doesn't bother me to sleep. Although lately I do like the ceiling fan going, so maybe that might help others. My doctor told me that a new drug was approved and should be on market in a year for tinnitus. Don't know any other details about it, but maybe this will help many.
