They gave this to me when I had my kidney stone, before I saw the doctor and could get the "good" stuff. It was like taking a baby aspirin for a migraine, IMO, not very effective.

I was given Tramadol after knee surgery and it did nothing to lessen pain. Also after a colon biopsy...did nothing!! What a waste!!!

Not effective for me at all...I think it is being used more and more because of the opioid crisis. I had better relief from Aleve.

I was given this for pain after my gall bladder was removed this past summer. I agree with @lolakimono. After taking one it was not very effective so I never used any more.

@LilacTree I've had a very recent experience with this drug. I usually have no reaction to drugs but upon taking my second dose, I became very nauseated, was lightheaded and dizzy, then had extreme chest pains. I quit taking it and contacted my doctor. She then had me try Lyrica which caused me to be lightheaded and off-balance to the point I fell down. All of this because I need to quit the NSAID I've taken for years.....I keep going back to it at half dose.

When I ruptured a disc in my back and the sciatic nerve pain was horrible, tramadol did nothing for me, but then, nothing helped that they were willing to prescribe. It was a tough 3 weeks of pain and no sleep but I’m glad they didn’t prescribe the super addictive drugs.

I took Tramadol many years ago for pain. It didn't help me at all. It literally was like taking nothing.

I took it very rarely for arthritic hip pain, when I was going out and was going to be on my feet. It took the edge off, but there was still a dull pain.

I had hip replacement surgery 8 months ago, and took it continuously for a week afterwards. I stopped it suddenly when I didn't need it anymore, and suffered a few days of unexplained crying.

Thanks to the hip surgery, I no longer have pain.

I was given Tramadol for sciatic pain. I had the opposite effect than most who responded. Maybe because of my age, or being a very small person, I felt as if I could fly! I took only 2 pills and discontinued the drug and switched to Aleve. I can understand how people get addicted to drugs that put you in a dilfferent world.

After I had my hip replaced 8 months ago, the HOSPITAL DOC mistakedly gave me a prescription for Tramadol instead of Hydrocodone. I came home and experienced the most excruciating pain to the point where I was actually crying...called the surgeon and they admitted the error. Of course, they can't phone in the prescription for a benzo so I had to have a friend go all the way crosstown to physically pick up the script, bring it to the pharmacy, and FINALLY I got some relief. I only used for a week and was very surprised that they ordered 60 pills! Too many!!

My primary care Dr prescribed it for me PRIOR to my knee replacement about 2 yrs ago..she told me it is helpful for generalized arthritis, I just take 1 every 12 hrs & it has been a Godsend for me..my knee surgeon actually kept me on it post-op, instead of normally prescribed Percocet. I think it needs to be taken on a routine schedule (instead of, PRN, as needed) to be effective.

My Medicare Advantage plan doesn't seem to have a problem with it..I have had no side effects from it.

I had the opposite effect from everyone else. When I was hospitalized for surgery, I was given tramadol. It evidently relieved my pain because the only time I could sleep was after a dose of Tramadol. But the down side for me and I will never take it again was that after I woke up, I could not get my eyes to open. I had to force them open and hold open or they would shut again. It was very scary.

Funny thing is my dog was given tramadol after ACL surgery and other times for neck/back pain and it worked wonders for him and no side effects!

My ortho surgeon gave me a prescription for a 50 mg dose of this medication after my consult for my first knee surgery. He could see I was in extreme pain, and wanted me to be more relaxed before my surgery. I think I could take up to 4 Tramadol pills a day, and the drug did help get me in a better place for the 2 months I took it. I took Lortab for pain control after the surgery.

Percoset was the prescribed pain medication after my recent knee surgery. After the first 2 weeks, my pain was not as intense as I remember the first time around. I started reducing my pain medication at 2 weeks, by 1 pill a day. I had PT 2x in week 4, and at that point my dose was 1 1/2 pills per day. I took my last pain pill that week. The nerve regeneration discomfort I am experiencing now is relieved by Aleve.

@LilacTree @KathyM23, funny this should come up. My dog just had a lipoma removed and the vet prescribed tramadol. When we got the dog home after surgery, she just paced the floors. The lipoma was on her chest so I thought she was in pain and couldn't lie down. She spent the entire day very restless. I spoke to one of the vets as mine was off. She told me to up the dose.

When our regular vet heard about the call, she called us and told us to stop the medication and prescribed a new pain pill. Apparently one of the side effects is that it makes the dog anxious and restless. She got the new pain killer and slept for 12 hours. We won't be using that again. LM

My elderly mother was prescribed Tramadol after a back injury. She experienced hallucinations and a personality change so we took her off it it. Nasty stuff. It helped her pain a bit but the side effects were so dramatic that we decided it wasn't worth using.

I took Tramadol after abdominal surgery. The nurse had me gauge my pain and I said about a 6. It worked well for me. If the pain is more severe, maybe it's not as effective. Have no idea of the dosage since this was a couple of years ago. Also, I take no other medications, so I suppose it's possible it had a greater impact on me. Not sure if that would be a factor.

I was prescribed 50 mg. Tramadol for hip arthritis which did help, but as my condition advanced; it really didn’t help anymore. Eventually I increased the dosage which helped, but again my problem worsened. Upon advice of my doctor I added Advil which helped so much in the beginning, but gradually the pills were no longer effective at all. Finally I did have the replacement surgery.

Hi Kachina,

Sorry to hear you've had a problem and I hope you are ok. The pain med in question did not work for me at all. The one you mentioned, Lyrica has negitive side effects and I hope you don't have to use. Best of luck to you and all of us who are just trying to get out of pain!
