I'm taking 4000 IUs a day as per my doctor but now I wonder if that is excessive? My Vitamin D reading came in at 27, and it's now up to 40. I hate taking pills.

My doctor recommend 2000 units a day. For awhile I was taking 5000 units on my own and my level went to 60. Too much Vitamin D can be associated with kidney stones too.

A close monitoring of your level needs to be done when taking such high levels.

Know the range that is acceptable for those results and monitor what a health care professional tells you once you get within that range, to not have excessive amounts in your system.

I agree that having the supervision of a health care professional and monitoring your numbers is important. Just be aware of what they are and what acceptable ranges are, and be sure the amount they prescribed/suggest don't send you over that range. Don't just take what you are told, understand where you are, where you need to be, and be sure you are being tested routinely to ensure your levels aren't too high.

If you don't trust what your doctor is telling you and are coming to strangers on a shopping channel BB for medical advice, I'd say it's time for a new doctor.

I switched doctors last year and for the first time ever, she checked my vitamin levels. My Vitamin D was low so I was put on I believe it was 2,000 IUs every other day for about 2 months. Then she waited 2 weeks and had me go for bloodwork just to have my level tested again. It came back fine and I didn't have to take anymore pills.

I'll have bloodwork done again in February.

Believe my dosage while on Vitamin D, while on IV antibiotics, was 75,000. My last blood draw before I was released was 20. Have had 2 more since my hospital stay and the both were close to 50.

After release I have been taking 2,000mg capsule per day. Going to have it checked again in about 3 months. Seems to be just right for me.

hckynut
