65+ Flu Shot

This is just a FYI. I have always posted in flu shot threads that I have evil reactions to the 65+ shots and not the regular flu shots.

I had my 65+ shot yesterday, and - minimal arm soreness, no swelling, no heat, no redness, no malaise...nada!

I don’t know if my body is getting used to the 4X dosage, This is my third year), if what strain is in the shot makes a difference, or whether the pharmacist did a really good injection, or what, but I no longer have to dread the uber-reaction I had been getting, as now I know that though it may happen, it’s not inevitable. Very pleased!

Glad the news is good. This is my fourth year for the senior dosage and I have had no issues...thankfully.

Glad to hear you are no longer having reactions to the shot. Have gotten flu shots for decades now and fortunately no reactions of any kind, not even a sore arm.

My wife and I got our monthly B-12 shot in one arm, and our flu shots in the opposite arm, no nothing from either shot by my wife or myself. Will continue flu and pneumonia shots as they are needed.

I'm 69 and have gotten the over 65 shot every year it has been available.

I've never had so much as a sore arm and have gotten a flu shot for as long as I can remember.

My DH & I got our 65+ flu shot yesterday for the 4th or 5th year & we just had minimal arm soreness. I have been getting a flu shot since I was 16 & no complications except for a sore arm.

Just to clarify/reiterate - I’ve never had any reaction issues from the regular flu shots over many years, it was only the first two over-65, 4X strength shots that socked me. All my guesses as to why this third shot was symptom-free are just guesses. I do wonder, though, if the body “gets used to” the stronger dose gradually.

Sometimes, the arm soreness is due to the skill and technique of the person giving the injection and not the shot itself. I always get flu shots and I never have any discomfort. This year I got the over 65 shot, I'm 57 but my doc thought I needed the extra protection due some health issues. I also got the pneumonia shot in the opposite arm and my arms were incredibly wore for 2 or 3 days. I had to take Tylenol. I think it was how I was injected but it's all ok.

I had the 65 shot the other day at my local pharmacy. I had zero arm pain or any issues. I do like the pharmacist and think she has a good style with the injections.

@tansy I was in cvs a couple of days ago to pick up for DH and the Pharm called out if anyone wanted a flu shot. There were a few of us there but no one got one. I do and have for years but I swtiched to get mine at walgreen's as they do get a shot give a shot, cvs doesn't do that. I want to ask Phil the Pharm if they offer that but I didn't get the chance to.

Anyway, I'll make a point to get mine this week at walgreen's.

I guess I also should say that I've had no reaction ever and don't expect any. They must work b/c I've not had the flu for years, maybe a bad cold but that's it. I'm 64 so I suppose no 65+ serum.

i've never gotten a flu shot, but would like to, this year. are you comfortable with getting it from a pharmacy rather than your dr.? do they forward info to dr. ofc, stating what you got? i'm debating on the shingles and pneumonia shot, too. thanks.

My pharmacy is inside the local market, @PINKdogWOOD, and was offering the get a shot/give a shotdeal. I haven’t had the flu in years either. 🙂

@10sluvr, my doctor’s clinic encourages everyone to get their flu shot at a pharmacy.

I would have no problem at all getting my flu shot from a pharmacist, they have to go through a special training and get certified. Nurses give shots, why not pharmacists. However, since you want the pneumonia and shingles shots; you should have your doctor do it. You can have pneumonia and flu shots at the same time but there might be a timing issue if you want the shingles shot. Ask your doctor about that, don't ask the internet. I say that because I had my shingles shot about week before I was scheduled for a TB test at work. It's was mandatory. However, I was surprised to hear that I couldn't have the TB test because the Shingles shot would affect the results.

I got a regular flu shot and the shingles vaccine at the same time in the same arm a few days ago. I had it done at Walmart at no cost to me. My insurance covered both. I'm 62yo and the pharm tech told me that Medicare doesn't cover the shingles vaccine so he suggested I get it before I turn 65, on Medicare.

I had my 65+ flu shot this past Wed. & so far, just a little arm soreness & that's it.

I get a flu shot every year & just turned 67 & if my doc's office gave me the 65+ shot for the past 2 years, I wasn't made aware of it. This year, I specifially asked for the higher dose one for seniors, so that's what they gave me.

@SilleeMee Medicare does cover shingles vaccine. It’s not covered under Part B (doctor’s visits and etc) but it’s covered under Part D, the Prescription drug benefit.

From Medicare dot gov:

”The shingles shot isn't covered by Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) or Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). Generally, Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D) cover all commercially-available vaccines (like the shingles shot) needed to prevent illness.”

I got my shot on Friday and they did Fluad without my requesting it (Rite Aid).

My arm was a bit sore, but that's all.

I'm healthy, and want to stay that way. I'm hoping this helps again this year.
