Synvisc Injections

I have osteoarthritis in both knees. I've had cortisone injections in the past, but the relief only lasts 4 - 6 weeks. The doctor said that if they didn't last long enough he would give me Synvisc injections the next time. Have any of you had these injections? Did they provide relief, and for how long?

@NickNack- I either had those, or one of the other ones like it.

It didn’t help me at all. The doctor said that sometimes the shots don’t provide any relief and I was one of those cases!

It didn’t help me at all. The doctor said that sometimes the shots don’t provide any relief and I was one of those cases!

@gidgetgh I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm sure that was frustrating. My internal medicine doctor recommended them to me. When I went to the orthopedic surgeon for the injections he said that insurance required you to try cortisone injections first. This was a couple of years ago, and I've finally decided I need to try something again. I hope I won't be one of the ones that they don't help if I decide to do this.

I have osteoarthritis in my knees and did have the series of three Synvisc injections and that worked for a little over two years but then my knee started hurting and got to the point where I was unable to stand very long and I also was using a knee brace on it. I then again had the three Synvisc injections but this time they had no effect on my knee pain and movement. My Orthopedic MD took more xrays and said that my knee was just to damaged from the Osteoarthritis so I then had a total knee replacement and am doing good.

@hayseed00 I'm glad to hear the injections worked for you for as long as they did. I'm glad your knee replacement was a success. I'm not at that point yet and really hope I never will be. I know knee replacement is the answer for so many people.

I am facing the same issue, the cortisone shot I had mid August gave me relief for about two weeks. I have an appointment for the gel injection next week, I am told this treatment is only 1 shot not a series as some others are

The Synvisc injections are for mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee. I had one knee injected with the series of three about five years ago with complete relief.

I completed a series of five gel shots, the Supartz brand, at the end of July. They have helped tremendously. My orthopedic doctor told me to return in six months for another round even if I am not in pain. I had my shots in both knees. I highly recommend them.

@NickNack I have been getting shots for at least 8-9 years now. I never received cortisone shots. I forgot the name of the product but they all are cousins to one another. The first time I received the series of three shots, the pain disappeared for 2 years. After those two years, I had and have been getting the shots every year. Again, it is a series of three shots, once a week for three weeks. If need be, you can miss one week and make it up but no longer than one week. Feel better.

I was lucky. I had this injection which gave me relief for about 8 months. Then I got a second one which lasted a few months. Then I listened to the pain in my knee and asked to have knee replacement surgery. All is well now. I wish you well.

I too have gone through numerous type knee injections. Cortisone lasts about a month for me. I had hyaluronic acid injections for 3 weeks and had little relief. My most recent was a Synvisc injection. I had 3 good months. To hold me over until I can have another, I am having another cortisone shot next month.

I am 5 days post-op from my second knee replacement. Synvisc was tried too late prior to my first surgery, and was of no benefit to me. I did not go that route this time. I had one cortisone shot that gave me only 7 days of relief, so I did not waste time on that either.

I was told by my orthopedic surgeon that once you're down to bone on bone in the knee, the Synvisc injections are not of much help. I guess the med needs some cartilage to latch onto to do its thing.

I think the original Synvisc has been replaced with something better. When my mom was considering it 15+ years ago, the company sent us a video to watch. Maybe there's one online or on YouTube?

@Nicknack Don't wait too long for knee replacement surgery. I've had one knee done and will need the other. It's expensive surgery and has become so common, I'm afraid Medicare may reduce the benefit paid. Mine included a 2-week stay in a rehab center since I live alone and had no one to help me.

@Kachina624 It's been a while since I've had x-rays done on my knees. I imagine when I see the orthopedic surgeon he'll do them again this time. No one has ever told me I needed to have surgery though. It would be difficult for me because, like you, I live alone. I would have to do something with my dog and cat while I was in rehab. I do know someone I trust who stays in people's houses and keeps their pets, but I don't know how she'd feel about staying for two weeks. You're right that the Medicare benefit could be reduced soon.

Thank you for posting this question as I am scheduled to get this shot in my knee next month.

I just had a cortisone shot last Monday which brought down a lot of inflammation.

For those who have had this shot: did it help with the mobility of the knee?

My knee does not really hurt. It just is stiff and am hoping this will help to get some movement back.

@NickNack Back when I had my knee done in 2011, I had 4 dogs and had a very dependable retired lady come daily to feed and water the dogs. I also had a woman in and out doing some painting and repair work in the house so the dogs had plenty of company.

@NickNack I started with the cortisone shots and my knees felt terrific for 6 months. Second set of shots only lasted about 6 weeks. Then I got the Synvisc and they really didn't help much. Using a cane now and steps are a really difficult. Now I have to get some courage and just go and get them replaced.
