@elizabethl123 You might want to consider getting dental insurance. I have a personal plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield that's around $26.50 a month.

im 88 and a widow have just so much to live on have ss and a retirement plan from hubby comes to about $2000 a month

@elizabethl123 Actually that is par for the course. I paid about $300 for one replaced composite filling.

@elizabethl123 Ouch. Bless your heart. Our dentist is wonderful. I had a lot of work done this summer and went over my insurance allotment. My dentist only charged me the reduced amount that the insurance companies agree to pay.

I'm not surprised....dental work is very expensive but still it stinks! As far as having a dental plan like with a lot of things it's a gamble.

I do hope your dentist offers a discount for seniors!

I was just at the dentist this week for what I thought would be a filling. The tooth already had a root canal, but there was new decay. Had to get a new crown -- $2625!! I have excellent dental insurance (usually they reimburse 80%) but this time they will only reimburse about 1/2. I live in NYC but I think $2625 for one crown is ridiculous.

I was looking for a new dentist a year ago and when I was shopping around I asked if they offered a senior discount. No dentist in my area is giving a senior discount. My new dentist charged me 500 dollars for 4 gum line fillings that lasted approx 3 months. The periodontist I'm going to now said the fillings did not last because they were poorly done. The dentists should have to give some type of warranty on their work.

That seems like a lot to me, but perhaps not depending on where you live.

If it were me, I would do some calling around for the future and ask different dental offices what their charge is for that same service.

Where I live, the charges vary considerably. Hubs and I drive about 15 miles to a smaller town to an excellent dentist and the prices are cheaper. Some in our community which is about 100 miles from Mexico drive there and go just across the border (something I would NEVER do). Some go to one of the nearby dentists of which there are many with varying prices. I think it pays to call around and ask your friends where they go and if they are happy.
