There are many that may look "fat" that have a Body Composition that says otherwise. This I know is a tiny minority, but there are those that look "fat" that are not.

"Muscle carries fat", and too much fat makes it harder for muscles(which includes the heart muscle) to efficiently do their job. More and/or toned muscle tissue make their task much easier. Many do not know, or just do not consider the heart to be a "muscle". If one were to be able to pick the muscle that wanted to perform at it's best, most with knowledge to of this physiology, would choose the "heart muscle".

A person can be a lot overweight, and carrying too much fat tissue, but they can also be physically fit. Healthy might be another story, but being over fat does not preclude everyone from being both physically fit, and physically healthy. That said, there are other factors involved in muscles having to "carry more fat" during the duration of their typical day.

You have more strain on every single joint of the human body, and that includes all the tendons that connect muscle to bone, and all the ligaments that connect bone to bone. Throw in the protective fluids and you have a lot more than just the health of the muscles, including the heart.

For the record: I was the FAT KID in late grade school and 2 years of high school, so I have been there. I decided that most high school girls did not want to date "fat boys". So I went on my first weight loss journey at age 14, knowing only "if I ate less, I would loss weight", that was all I knew back in 1953.

To make it even harder, I worked at a Drive-in Restaurant, at times in the kitchen and working behind the ice cream fountain. I accomplished my goal of losing 60lbs and went from an introvert to a very talkative extrovert.

Like many that have lost a lot of weight through food restriction only, I lost and gained a lot of weight for many years. When I was almost 30, in 1969, I went on a mission to learn as much as I could about the human body in relation to health/physical fitness/weight and injuries.

Much of what I learned was by "trial/error, and lots of physical injuries". Little was known back then about prevention/rehabilitation, or real causes of many exercise related injuries. I read all I could find/attended many clinics and found out there were people that knew about the above mentioned things.

I could type a book about my experiences with weight loss and exercise in relation to the human physiology. I however think this post is sufficient to express my feelings about this topic.

hckynut(john)

Awww!!!

That is so sweet!

I can't link to it because of ads on the page and I can't copy the contents because copyright issues.

It's from The Telegraph and it's from 2015

It's easily found on Google, the title is " The cynical lie that "fat is fabulous" and why plus size bloggers should never be considered role models for young women"

By Dr Sarah Burnett

I found it to be very interesting and still relevant. I don't think it's mean, the way I see it it's just realistic and sometimes the truth is hard to hear.

I have a daughter, just a small child and to be honest, I would never want her to get to be plus size and if I saw her heading in that direction I would help her stop it.

Would you want your daughter to be plus size?

The other day we were driving past a field with some cows in it and she was in the back observing the landscape then she asked me why are cows fat.

I explained that they were not fat, that it was healthy for them to be big, just as elephants aren't fat, just made that way.

That was OK but if I hear her criticizing a person for being fat or asking a rude question I will teach her that it's not OK and that it's better to be fat than to be rude or mean.

But this article really made me think, I see people giving themselves cutesy names for being overweight or obese when in reality there is nothing cute about it. I don't think.

Anyway, if you read that article, would you agree with the Dr?

(Skip the comments below the article because some people just want to be mean and have nothing constructive to add to a discussion other than their venom.)

Obesity in America is a real issue. While we are accepting the larger and plus size women in fashion, there is nothing fashionable about belly fat and being over wieight. Ask any doctor.

I didn't read the article, but I do know that people do not want to be fat. They don't become fat on purpose and most are people who have the same self control as thin people proved by scientific studies. They are not flawed.

There are some people who eat to much overcome emotional pain. Sometimes they were sexually assulted as children or had some other horrific thing happen to them.

Some plus size people are not fat at all. They are just bigger people, tall and wider.

No one should be a role model for children because they are fat, skinny, tall or short. Good role models are chosen because of their achievements, not by what they look like,

I never had a role model my entire life and a I think that most people don't.

My best friends sister has a daughter who is plus size. She is over six feet tall and is extra large. Her friends, family and DH all love her the way she is. Sometimes when we are at events I hear people comment negatively about her size. I smack down their comments and tell them to stop being rude.

Would I want a plus size daughter? Well, I have an adult daughter and she is not even five feet tall and she is petite and thin. I would love her no matter what her size is...it doesn't matter to me. Her daughter, my granddaughter age 13, , is way bigger than her mother and will probably be plus size as an adult. Her father is 6'6" and she is tall like him and is bigger boned. She plays sports and eats healthy, but will never be a small person. I would never want her to feel inferior because of her size.

Articles like this are sexist and geared to females only. We are all different and for all general purposes, size doesn't matter. We are much more than our physical selves.

And yes, fat is fabulous and no fat is fabulous too.

I have to agree with that article. I think it is sad what is happening in America. It has been proven that 1 in 5 Americans are obese. This is the number one killer followed by heart disease.

You watch TV and all they do is have these food commercials. They have combined so many foods that you would not even think about unless you saw it. IHOP is selling donuts with fruit toppings, as a side dish. It is hard not to want to taste some of these foods.

I found that article very interesting and honest. Thank you for posting.

I am lus size and remember being shoved into exercise classes and having my food intake watched by my mother. Her advice was that a lady always left a table hungry. Yes, I was in the military for 4 years so I was in shape. But I know having someone hovering over food and exercise is not an incentive.

I think being fat or obese is a health problem, that being said, most doctors go by a height and frame chart to decide what your ideal weight is. It is almost impossible for most of us to maintain that kind of ideal without starving yourself. I remember when my husband and I went to a nurse practitioner to discuss a low chol. diet for my husband. She said could not believe my husband who is to the eye thin, was considered obese according to their chart. Anyway, to make a long story short, I knew more about what to eat and how to cook for someone on a low fat diet than she did and she said as much. My husband did loose 14 lbs. and was so thin it was ridiculous and he still had to go on a statin to reduce his cholesterol. I don't thing the article is necessarily wrong, but everyone has to live their own lives and live with the consequences of their choices whatever they may be.

some of it . I think everyone would agree that morbid obesity is unhealthy as is anorexia . The body mass index , scales , & waist measurement are tools to use and guide. None are absolute. We are all individuals underneath our skin .

I have read that belly fat/ brown fat/ visceral (sp?) fat is dangerous to have . The "Wheat Belly" theory makes sense to me as to why more people seem to be affected.

Should clothing manufacturers stop producing all plus size clothes ?-- NO. People come in different sizes and everyone deserves attractive clothing , no matter what their journey.

What we put into our mouths is important as is what comes out of them. Empathy is a good thing to strive for IMO.

The group of women in the photo look pretty healthy to me. It all depends on the various blood tests' results. If they are all fairly normal, I wouldn't worry about it. I've known quite a few people in their nineties who are and/or who were 'robust' looking. Curvy, large-boned, or whatever. All in all, I say that if the test results are within normal range and a person feels fabulous and strong, that's the important thing. Normal test results and feeling good and strong. That would be a good thing, imo. ........ (Not talking about unhealthy and/or medically obese folks, etc.) .........

As Americans become more and more heavy, becoming plus size is more and more of the norm. Almost all shoes, and now tall boots come in wide calf widths to accomodate this. Sixty-seven percent have a BMI of over 25 which is considered overweight, and thirty-five percent are considered obese. Clothing manufacturers have also gone along with this trend by lowering the sizes to make women happy. I weight what I used to weigh in the 70's, but I wear 6 sizes smaller. Here is an interesting article that speaks about this. http://time.com/how-to-fix-vanity-sizing/

I really appreciate a little extra room, because I love tall boots. One size doesn't fit all and it never did.

I feel that the trend towards overweight acceptance has led to the disappearance of the "petite department" in many stores. It's a sign that the small woman has become a minority.

There is a HUGE difference between plus size and so obese that you can barely walk, need people to pull you up off the floor and having multiple large rolls of fat hanging out between layers of clothes/seen through the clothes. The former is any woman who is beyond the size of 10 being considered fat by the fashion industry; the latter is a person who will have numerous health issues and, according to every piece of research I've read, not live beyond the mid-to late 50's (if that).

Holding the latter up to standards that should be applauded, supported and deemed acceptable is wrong and yet.....it's seen everywhere as being those things.

I say this as a woman who once weighed over 400 pounds, had to wear diapers because I often couldn't make it to the toilet fast enough, needed a wheelchair when shopping because of pain in my hips, knees (which would buckle due to my weight), ankles and feet and who was taking 23 pills a day due to medical issues ALL caused by my fatness.

Yes, I DO agree with this article.

Edited for for grammar.

I couldn't agree more with this article because being fat ruins your health. How much is this going to cost our country in health care costs? We are 20 trillion dollars in debt already.

Politcal correctness is literally killing us.

I have been obese and I have been thin. The latter has always been preferable. I am now somewhere in between, a lifetime member of Weight Watchers. For those of us with a tendency to be overweight, it is hard to maintain a normal weight but it is really essential to good health. We can create any and all euphemisms to describe being fat but our bodies know better. When you're young, you might get away with being overweight but by the time you're a senior citizen, you are unlikely to remain unscathed. While I detest many of the insults, often based on bias rather than facts, hurled at overweight people, especially women, I cannot agree that from a health perspective being overweight is good for you.

Skinny does not always equate to healthy either. I know a woman who is tiny and smokes like a chimney. I also know a lot of thin women who obsess over exercise and what they eat and starve themselves. But no one treats the skinny badly even if they are skinny because of their bad and dangerous habits. Some heavier women are healthier by far than some very thin ones.

What does not help me is anyone telling me I need to exercise or lose weight. I have to decide on my own and I always do. Doesn't mean I succeed or keep it off but I know what I need to do. I have never accepted my fat. I'm not one who loves her curves or rolls or any of it. I kinda wish I could be more kind to myself about my body. I see people a lot heavier than me and think they're beautiful but look at myself and just can't say that.

I believe bashing and shaming women for their weight never helps them in any way.

It's an interesting read. Children should be exposed to women athletes, women astronauts, female members of military and such, not because they are thin but because they are active.

Look at Serena Williams, pre-baby. She is as fit as any woman on the planet and she's not tiny. The message should be "take care of yourself, be active, eat right"

The message should not be about body image.

Looks can be deceiving

The more focus you put on food the more of an issue it will be in the long run. I never forced my daughter to eat anything. the choices she had as a toddler were what we were eating. I did not make special meals geared towards a child. There's a window that every parent has, although short, to influence their children's eating habits. I never used food as a reward or a way to bribe. In a nutshell I did everything the opposite of my own mother! LOL

For the record I never ever ordered off the children's menu for my child! Those things are atrocious!

The outcome of my method it is now I have an adult child that eats to live; she doesn't live to eat
