Anyone had a procedure done that you took the pills for sedation? Did it work?

Are you talking about in addition to - or instead of - numbing shots, gas, etc.?

When the boys were very young and needed major work, they gave them "goofy juice", a liquid valium-type drug, prior to using gas.

I love nitrous (gas), but when it's MAJOR (bone graft, dental implants, etc.), I get IV sedation with an extra boost of valium.

Yes, these are pills (I'll find out the name tomorrow when my husband takes me) that are in addition to the gas.

What a great dentist you had to calm your children when they were young. Had I had one like that I might not have such a fear of dentistry today.

I searched til I found a pediatric dentist who would do appropriate sedation. Took about 12 phone calls, but finally found an awesome dentist.

Most are the barbaric ones who strap 'em down and let 'em scream.

Yes, I did. They gave me a very low dose of Halcion. One to take a short time before going to the dentist and one when I got there. You have to have someone available to drive you of course. It was miraculous! They did an hour and a half procedure that seemed like 20 minutes to me. I've always dreaded any sort of dental work and this was something I could never have had done without the sedation.

Best part is that apparently some patients who undergo sedation dentistry lose their fear of dentists. It happened to me. I can't say it's my favorite thing to do but I don't feel like I'm going to pass out anymore either!

Been there, done that. To make matters worse, the dentist had been an Army dentist, did not even believe in the deadening shots. If you had eleven cavities, you got eleven fillings...drilling and all while being strapped in.

I know my Mother thought she was doing what was best for us but my entire life I have spent horrified of a dentist.....and to make matters worse, I have terrible teeth.

Sound like mine as a child.

Finally started giving shots when I fainted from the pain during a root canal procedure where he was removing the nerve.

OMG!! You must be as horrified of a dentist as I am. I have often thought I might have a heart attack while sitting in the chair. My dentist cannot put anything metal in my mouth and now uses plastic instruments to clean and check my teeth.

I just wanted to make sure that those pills will work as I am sure I have a cavity.

I am having some major dental work done in a few weeks, it will be done with novicane and IV sedation, which scared me silly. I have never had it and have no idea how I will react.

Do I have anything to fear.

Yes, I had to have some "deep tissue" cleaning and was given medication to take before I went. I honestly take a X---x just when I go in for a regular cleaning. It is the most anxiety causing thing I do in life...go to the dentist. Thank goodness I go to the same practice for 50 years and the staff and dentist is wonderful and even has someone wipe my tears when I'm in the chair and a nervous wreck.

No...you have nothing to fear. I have worked on patients who had IV sedation. There was an anesthetist present, and everything went fine.

I've had the IV sedation before. My dentist met me at an oral surgeons office who was qualified to use the IV. My dentist and his assistant did the work, the oral surgeon monitored the IV. It's the way to go if you can afford it.

This was years ago when I was working and had dental insurance, but, the IV alone was $2000 out of my own pocket. My insurance would not pay for it. I am assuming that it included the surgeons time and use of his equipment, etc.

I simply cannot afford that kind of elaborate sedation now. I wish I could. It's the easiest and less stressful and the most painful part is done when it's all over.

You will be fine.

had implant inserted under IV sedation last spring; weird sensation but painless.....expensive but worth it; can't imagine having had it done without it.

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed with IV sedation.I literally felt like I was out for 5 seconds, woke up and everything was fine.

I found out yesterday that my dentist will drill one cavity that has come up around a very old filling. He wants to remove the old filling, drill the new cavity and then fill everything in, then put an overlay over that.

He is not certified to give you anything other than valium and nitrous. At one time he had an associate who was certified to prescribed the Halcion. I'm praying that this valium/nitrous combination will work because these are my two back teeth in the top.

The cost?? $2000

The valium and nitrous should do the job I would think. You should be tripping on that. As to the cost, it seems just about anything they do on your teeth besides a simple filling is over $1000. Good luck with your procedure!

When you say "overlay," does that mean a crown? That would explain the cost.

Have you given birth? Just tough it out.
