@hckynut

The deepest muscles of the core stabilize the lumbar - they also work with the middle layer and superficial layer. If these muscles are weak and/or unbalanced or lack endurance (Stuart McGill's Torso Muscular Endurance Test is used to assess this) then the rest of the body suffers. This could be a VERY LONG post which I'm sorry but I dont have time to do right now. I've been steeped in functional anatomy for the past 7 months and may get back to a llonger post on it (if anyone is really interested) at some later date.

I would never assume to tell someone with long-standing back issues what they should do for their condition. I was simply talking about what the core is and isn't and what it's function is. Many people would tell you that the core is all of the musculature of your body, minus your appendages.

I am not sure how we got to the question of what constitutes the core from how to help a woman fix her jiggly triceps, but I'll just leave it for now that without a strong core athletic performance is highly compromised. And, yes, of course I am including the muscles in both the the anterior and posterior portion of the body, as well as deep lateral muscles.

Hope you, Cindy, and your furkids are all doing well!

Maybe I will bore you all with a dissertation on the function of the core in the near future.

CoachKitty

About to finish 4 months with my personal trainer, lost 12-1/2 inches overall, legs are really strong, arms are also strong and that "wave" in the arms is almost gone!

Am I done? No, I realized I need to continue on and will be signing up for 6 more months with my trainer. So much to do and I do feel 100% better than I did 4 months ago.

I've heard you can do it yourself, maybe yes and maybe no, but I do want the "no excuse" method, I find myself making excuses for not going to the gym last year and it was maybe tomorrow, then tomorrow was maybe tomorrow and there were weeks I didn't go.

Also, I enjoy my training sessions. I sometimes believe I will not survive, I hurt but later in the day after the entire recovery process I feel so good. I put a pair of jeans on and actually there's an inch of room. These are all major accomplishments for me, I'm motivated to get all the "excess" gone, taking all my vitamins and fiber and don't want to ever "sit" in a chair and become stagnant.

So I never believed "them" that they say if you exercise you'll have more energy, yes, they are right.

So far, the smoking is gone (years ago, I posted that), weight and body is getting under control, motivation is at an all time high, my endurance has grown, and attitude has improved. It's a good thing.

I just hope I can help anyone who reads this get motivated, no excuses, just do it and I was actually having a hard time but 4 months later its getting easier.

oh and I want to add, I haven't had really nice nails for about 4 years, was back to chewing on them and they looked bad, I guess it's all in the attitude, bought some Pro Strong from the Q (love that stuff) and my nails are really strong and beautiful. The mind is a powerful thing and that product is wonderful if you haven't tried it.

@Mistreatedbycs

Thanks for sharing your story with everyone here. Your results and comments do not surprise me, I have heard them from hundreds over several decades. Your story pretty much breaks things down the core of what it takes to succeed, from "doing it", to the benefits you have reaped from your hard work.

To say I am happy for you is an understatement. You should be very proud of your accomplishments, and I like that you said, something to the effect: "it isn't over". Staying at a satisfactory level of body composition/weight, and physical fitness is, and should be a lifelong way of life.

I have fallen into the "them" category for several decades now. Seen many, many non-believers, some of which took the same route as yourself. Unfortunately, too many just couldn't get past the beginning phase and never got to reward phase, which is, like myself, "feeling great".

I wish you the best moving forward and continued success the rest of your life. For me personally, I have had many major barriers to overcome and rehabilitation's to restore much of my physical and mental setbacks. One thing I, and yourself, should never lose is your/my optimism, and the desire and dedication to reach our goals, regardless of obstacles, which many see as "age".

Your post/story has probably motivated many people that read this post, and for that too, I thank you. Best always,

hckynut(john)

I run two miles routinely now...when I couldn't run more than 50 yards before!

It's a great feeling, isn't it???

Do you think this is the most effective tri training? Congrats on your new certification!

If you wanted to isolate the bicep muscles you would do a curl of some kind, where the bicep is the prime mover. Also, given that the person is standing while doing the exercise (unsupported) and in a hip hinge position, it also engages other muscles of the core (the latissimus dorsi being part of the outer layer of the core).

I'm a huge proponent of doing exercises that engage muscles that cross more than one joint as they involve more muscles at the same time and tend to be more "functional" in nature. More "bang for your buck", if you will

Thanks for the congrats on my new cert. I studied hard for it! I actually studied way BEYOND the test, but I love this stuff. Functional anatomy to me is fascinating. And very useful!
