When I first bought my new computer I hated Win 8. It was just different. Now that I use it doesn't make a difference. Unfortunately by 5 month old HP just DIED. I called Sun, rec'd a new motherboard today and they are sending a tech on Thurs. to install (I expected a box to send it back) so I am only without it for a few days, No Charge! I was very surprised. Will be interesting to see how professional the tech is. In the meantime I pulled out my old computer.

In case you haven't downloaded the most recent Windows 8.1 update, it is worth it. No longer does your computer boot to the tiles. You can still get to them by clicking on the start button. I guess the complaints were heard.

Ooh, good to know!

I don't have any Win8 computers, but I just ordered a new laptop, with 8.1, for my husband (NOT from here, of course) and have been doing research on how to get it set up for him in a way that is most familiar to him (he totally cannot handle change). Sounds like it might end up being easier than I had hoped.

I googled, researched and found a download called Classic Shell. It does not change the OS in any way, it's like a skin. The user has the choice of how things will look; XP, windows 7, etc. It is a free download, several places offer a version of it. The best way I can suggest knowing you found the original is there will be a request for a donation. The donation is entirely optional. I love it.

I'm a long-term XP user who made the switch to Win 8 about a month ago. I decided that from the start I was going to use Win 8 as intended, instead of trying to make it be something it's not (another version of XP or Win 7).

The verdict: I love Win 8. I love the tiles, I love the touch capability and use touch a lot. I love all the ways I can customize it to suit my preferences and needs. I have no complaints and lots of praise for Win 8.

To Scottie: I really hated trying to figure out Windows 8 and almost sent my new computer back, I considered having 7 installed, then I found Classic Shell. I am not a computer tech, but I am also not totally computer "dumb" either. So, if you are like me, somewhere in the middle, Classic Shell may be a good option for you too. I feel it makes me comfortable because the look is familiar while at the same time I am using up to date OS. I felt the same way about the oe.com email I found today. Just having things look and feel familiar was all I needed. I still want the old solitaire and mahjong I used to enjoy. I sincerely hope this info is helpful.

Thanks for the add'l info on Classic Shell. In looking at it more I realized that I've actually used it before. I think I got some info from it to put the 'Quick Launch' back in my lower tool bar. I really missed that when Win 7 came along and Quick Launch was not part of it. So I add it back in. On my first Win7 computer I didn't know how to do that (later on I found the instructions online) and used Classic Shell for that.

I don't mind change but it's a drag when they completely remove useful features. I guess everybody doesn't like the same stuff I like. Ha! Imagine that.
