topic Card Reader/Writers in Electronics

Before I take a trip to B&H Photo, can someone tell me why card readers do not work after a certain amount of time? I currently have a Digital 6 Slots Hi Speed 51-IN-1 and I previously had a SanDisk model; both stopped working after a few months.

I know I can go directly from camera to computer, but readers are so much faster. I would like to know if this is perhaps a flaw in these particular brands or the general consensus.

Thank you in advance for your replies.
