I've heard about this website and have seen commercials for it. It's suppose to be totally free no strings attached to get your credit report. Has anyone ever used this? Do you think it's safe and really free?

Go to www.usa.gov This is the government site and the only one I trust. In the search bar type in "annual credit report request form" Mail it in after filling out. It goes to all 3 of the majors, you only need the last 4 digits of your social security number and you receive it in the mail. You are allowed to send it once a year. I would never trust the internet for this sensitive information.

Back comes a detailed report about 4 to 5 pages long. Each credit bureau sends us one. Amazing how many people have checked your credit report without your knowing. Also with each one a toll free number comes in case you want to dispute something or have something taken off that doesn't belong to you.

This is the link for the Federal Trade Commission, which gives a link to the Annual Credit Report site (the one mandated by federal law): FTC Consumer Website

Once you go to that, there is a link given at the top of the page to get your free credit report. You are allowed, by law, to get one free credit report per year from each of the three big reporting agencies.

I do what was recommended many years ago - request one report from each of the agencies, each quarter. The three agencies have similar information, so for example, get your report from Equifax now. Check it for accuracy and correct anything that's wrong.

In four months (or sooner, if you spot anything suspicious) get the next report from one of the other two and your third report from the final agency four months after that.

This way, you are keeping tabs on your credit report 3 times a year. Of course, if you think anything is very wrong, you'll want to check with the other two sooner, as a request for a correction to one, does not get passed on to the other two.

I hope this makes sense to you. I would never use any other service except the one set up by the Federal Government. It is totally free and easy to use. (You can, of course, print out a copy.)

I have done some research and there is a lot of misinformation out there about credit reports and credit scores. 1. You can get one free credit report from the US gov FTC website. There are 3 different major credit bureaus. You can only choose one to get your report from. All creditors do not report to all 3 bureaus. You cannot get your credit score from the gov web site only a report. 2. the credit karma web site is free. They get their income from selling ads on the site. HOWEVER, the most important thing to know about this site is that they are not giving you a true credit score from one of the three major bureaus. Instead they are giving you a ESTIMATE of your score based on what info you provide them from their own calculations. Their estimate can differ quite a bit from your actual.score.

Yes, I used creditKarma.com.

Gave me my credit score but it does NOT provide a FULL credit report like Experian or the other 2 reporting agencies where you can see your creditors (past and current), amounts owed, other details, etc.

creditKarma was free and I'm glad I used them - it confirmed that my credit score was same as Experian.

The only thing I didn't like was that they sent emails regularly (hate that). I just marked them as "spam" and all subsequent emails from them now go to spamland.

In the search bar type in "annual credit report request form" Mail it in after filling out. It goes to all 3 of the majors, you only need the last 4 digits of your social security number and you receive it in the mail. You are allowed to send it once a year. I would never trust the internet for this sensitive information.

Stardust2 you mentioned you only need to put the last 4 digits of your social security number on the form.I printed up the form and it seems you must put your entire SSN on the form. Is that correct?

There is a place where you shade out the circle if you only want to put in your last 4 numbers of the SS.
