I have this in my 2013 car. DH would like to add one to his 2010 vehicle. Is this cumbersome? Hard to do? Would like to ask someone who has one that isn't built in. TIA. LM

We have it in the house, Lilysmom. I remember looking it up on the internet when we first got it to see what was involved in putting it in your car. I remember reading that if you wanted it done right, have it put in by a professional. That was about three years ago though.

There are always people around who know how to tinker with cars, but I ended up not putting it in my car. Good luck!

You go to somewhere like radio Shack and buy something called a Roadie. This will attach to your car radio and then you can pick up the satellite radio if you buy the service. However, since it needs a radio station to play through you can lose reception as you drive out of the stations service area and you will have to search for another station - unlike the built in ones that play continuously. We have a roadie that DH uses in his truck and we also take it to our camper and use it there all summer. It is not quite as good as the ones that come with the car but better than nothing.

We had Sirius/XM in a car that had a cassette player. A device gets inserted into the cassette player opening, you have a small device that displays and selects the channels that has to sit somewhere in the car. A sensor has to be mounted on the outside of the car to receive the signal (it's small) and the wires are run under the vinyl window moldings. And a wire goes into a power outlet (like a cigarette lighter). Our 25 year old son installed it and it worked great. There are lots of wires but they can be hidden.

We tried the installation using an unused radio channel but in this area it's hard to find any unused frequencies and the reception was poor so the cassette player option was better for us with that car.

It would honestly be less expensive to have a larger data package on your iphone and play iTunes radio instead. Much greater variety and the commercials are minimal.

I think in the not too distant future, they (Sirrius) will be long gone due to lack of customers. Ten years ago, they were great, but there are so many options today that make better sennse economically and technologically.

I will only say this about Sirius. We have a cell phone that we carry with us when we go somewhere and is mainly used for emergencies. We do not give our cell phone number out.

Somehow, Sirius has gotten our cell phone number. They call twice daily wanting us to subscribe. I have finally reported them to the donotcall.gov website. I do not answer the call because they are using our minutes to "browbeat" us into a subscription.

I would NEVER subscribe with any company that uses such tactics.

I have to laugh reading this thread. My husband's car came with Sirus and when it came time for renewal they hounded him to renew. He gave it and renewed. Now he listens to ""regular"" radio. I have no idea why he bothered to renew. Guess it was easier than getting all their phone calls.

If you would like a real in-dash unit, give Crutchfield.com a try. Give one of their techs a call or chat online, tell them what you're looking for, and they'll suggest something in your price range. I bought a new Kenwood unit and had it installed in my '05 Tacoma truck that was great.

As for handling Sirius, wait until a couple of days before your renewal comes due, then call them and tell them that you want to cancel. They'll say "fine, I can take care of that for you", then they'll ask why. Tell them something like "It's more than I want to pay", or, "I just don't use it that much". They'll come back with a much better price than you'd pay if you just let them renew it. Works for me every time. If the time comes that it doesn't, I have an MP3 player loaded up with my favorite songs that plugs right into my vehicle.
