Kindle HD 8.9 32 capabilities?

I take care of my mom, who has trouble seeing and cannot work any kind of computer, laptop, etc. Would the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 32 - on sale today, be able to do internet browsing and receive e-mail? Many of my mom's relatives send her pictures and messages and I saw that with an HDI cable I could put them on the tv if the Kindle Fire could handle the internet and email ok. Any information would be appreciated.

I also take care of my mother who is 86 and got this for her. I don't know how tech savvy your mother is but I feel this was a waste of money for my mother. My mother will play games on the Kindle but only if I'm sitting beside her and helping her. She wants to learn how to use it, but frankly she is not good with anything electronic. I feel bad for her because she wants to learn but I'm not sure she is capable.

Thanks for the replies. My mother will not be able to use the Kindle (or any type of computer or tablet), but if I can at least sit with her and put the pictures on the television, she will be able to see them. Also, if I can download the newspaper from her hometown, she will be able to look at some familiar news, obituaries, etc. The screen on the tablet and laptop are just not large enough for her to read...but if I can put it on the tv, she will be able to. Someone had said for the internet, email, etc... the Kindle would not work; yet it seems as though you can search the web, etc. without any problem.

It is very easy to set up your email account. It works fine for the internet too. You can hook the HD up to your TV easily with the proper cord. Be sure and get a long one if your TV is very far from where you will be sitting. I got mine on Amazon for really cheap.

P.S. You can't use the cord with the Kindle HDX model.

There is a device sold on Amazon by a company called LapWorks which is a holder for the device that clamps on and has a Velcro loop on the back for the hand so the user holds it in the palm with no effort. It's a godsend for people with arthritis. It is safer for the device has it decreases the possibility of dropping it.

It does come with a folding case, stylus, and earbuds. I still think it's not a bad price.

This tablet on QVC is very expensive. These accessories add $70 to the actual price.

On 2/21/2014 kachina624 said: There is a device sold on Amazon by a company called LapWorks which is a holder for the device that clamps on and has a Velcro loop on the back for the hand so the user holds it in the palm with no effort. It's a godsend for people with arthritis. It is safer for the device has it decreases the possibility of dropping it.

HSN has a similar device. I don't know what it's called, but if you pull up the product page on any of their tablets, the holder probably will be listed as a suggested extra purchase. I think it is $30 or $40.

Lowry and Tyzach, this is just a suggestion-but for your situations, consider contacting your local Council on Ageing as well as Lighthouse for the Blind. Medicare covers nothing as we all know-in terms of durable goods-but these two organizations may be able to help you hone in on what might work most efficiently for your parent's individual situations. There is so much coming out now-and for those in need, grants and funds to defray costs.

      Poodlepet
