Landline Technology Update

Landlines will be turned off Dec 2025.

You can still keep your landline but it will now be VoIP so if your power goes out NO Phone. You need some type battery back-up. Says if you don't have cell reception in your area the provider should provide one?

Your bill will be the same since the phone company says they are still providing the service.

A Broadband connection will be installed if you don't have Interent for landline use only.

Your phone will be plugged into your router or a new socket, which in some cases will need an adaptor supplied by your provider.

You can use your same home phone unless it's too old.

Your phone will still have a dial tone like you have now.

Your phone company is supposed to call you regarding the change. They are already moving customers over to the new digital system.

@Nightowlz Thank you for posting this information, although I sure hate to hear it. Where I live, we do not get cell reception whatsoever. Plus, being being so far out in the country and my parents health being an issue, I'm terrified that a cell tower will not be put in in time.

Also, because internet service here must be provided through a satellite, the only two people I do know with the VOIP phones have such poor service, the line is constantly filled with static so badly it's hard to talk to them.

I pray that this is considered first beforehand. There are a lot of families on my stretch of highway until cell service is working.

Landline services are changing in the UK. The old system will be switched off in 2025 and landlines will use broadband to make calls. If you rely on a landline, you will still be able to make calls but the technology that powers them will be different.

I just had ATT out to fix a problem with mine and he didn't say anything about it. My husband and I had a discussion recently about VOIP. He thought I had it and I didn't think so. His phone is VOIP. The guy told me mine was not VOIP and that I would need to have ATT Internet go get it (with them). DH's phone line is with our internet provider.

As much as I'm paying for a landline w/no long distance, I am considering giving it up. I mostly liked having it do to E-911, and it did come in handy when we were out of power for a week after tornadoes came through and took out the main transmission lines coming into the town. However, none of my portable phones worked. I do still have a princess phone though although I don't currently have it plugged into the system. Easy to do in an emergency though.

I've had a VOIP phone since 2016 when my landline company wouldn't fix the 'wiring'...I had no phone service for months so I switched to VOIP (Ooma service). It's free, just pay for the box and use your own landline phone.

I also have a battery backup for my phone, router and laptop.

@cheriere The phone system on our farms is a wire on a utility pole. The wiring connects to the phones in the house. Are your phones attached to a wire, too? The phone works even in a power outage. It operates independently from the power company. I hope those work forever.

The phone companies are doing away with the old copper analog system they have been using.

It's going digital with VoIP which is Voice Over Internet Protocol. It uses your Internet connection to make or receive phone calls.

If your power or internet go out you won't be able to make a call unless you have some type battery back-up.

VOIP phones are connected by a wire, too. But that wire is from an internet modem/router so when the power goes out you lose the phone and the internet unless you have a battery backup.

One of my sisters sent me some info. She wanted to get her landline installed after she got rid of it. She already has VoIP so not going to bother.

I'm listing info I read at Sky News that came up when I search landlines end 2025. All kinds of info about it.

@SilleeMee Thank you for the explanation. I had no idea what you all were discussing. (VOIP) The phone lines on the farms are old school. They were installed by a rural telephone cooperative well before the cell phone era. I hope they will continue to be maintained.
