@gardenman : Received email to contact WOW because our discount was expiring soon. DH is a huge sports fan and doesn't like change. I don't like our cable bundle of $230 month. So talking yesterday with WOW our bill will increase $30, not willing to negotiate but decrease internet speed and channels for only $15 difference. Suggested YouTube special. We have 3 TVs and one is LG purchased in 2011 and will need Amazon fire stick. DH needs the Bally Sports channel to watch the Atlanta Braves.

DH very upset. I ordered the Amazon fire stick to try on the LG tv. Friend told me that she has the latest Amazon fire stick and can watch Bally Sports.

I am really interested in the Direct TV streaming service.

Trying to keep all the channels for DH is stressful. He watches SEC football, NFL, BIG 10, all the ESPN channels and MLB. We have Amazon Prime and a few apps on the Amazon fire tablet but he prefers to watch everything on the big screen tv. I have until 5\16\24 to notify WOW.

DH was also upset that the other night he had to use his radio for the Braves game.

We are both disabled and tv is our major entertainment. Plus you have previously been so kind in helping me with so many tech issues that I struggle with.

Trying to tell DH that the cost of everything is increasing and why pay $270 per month when something else is available. I don't like change but something needs to be done.

@gardenman wrote:

Pretty much everyone will be dumping cable TV because the cable TV companies are dumping cable TV. Frontier stopped providing cable TV a few years back and others are joining them in dropping it. The cost to run a cable TV system has become prohibitive. New cable boxes are expensive and prone to failure. Maintaining the equipment required is expensive. Constantly negotiating new contracts with program providers, cities, etc., is expensive. It's nearly impossible for traditional cable companies to compete with streaming services.

Spectrum is switching from traditional cable to streaming. Mid-Rivers Communications ended cable TV services last December. Wilkes Communications and RiverStreet Networks are dropping cable TV. Sparklight Cable/Cable One is dropping cable. WOW! is dropping cable.

Cable TV is going extinct. You might as well hop onto a streaming service now as you won't have a choice in a bit. Even the big guys like Comcast are talking about quitting cable TV and going into streaming.

A big part of the issue is the franchise contracts cable companies are required to negotiate with each city/community. A lot of the franchise contracts specify which channels must be carried. They might require that live coverage of certain local events be available. They must provide a local studio for local programming. They may require that cameras and microphones be provided. Negotiating franchise deals with every community you serve gets a bit insane and expensive.

The profit just disappears after a while in cable TV. You have to keep raising your rates to make any money and then you lose customers because you raised the rates. Equipment breaks down or gets stolen. It's just not a profitable business these days.

Streaming services avoid most of those issues as the customer provides the equipment. There are no franchise fees to negotiate or haggle over. There's no need for local studios or local productions. It's a much simpler arrangement than the older cable TV model.

We could see cable TV revert to the old mom-and-pop model that it started with and each community having a small cable TV system run by locals. The mega-cable companies are all getting out of the business though.

Can't figure out why I feel so anxious/nervous about dumping cable. Have decided that YouTube TV is the streaming service I'll go with. I have an old TV so will be using an Amazon Fire Stick to use YT TV. I'm so disgusted with Comcast increasing my cable/internet/phone bundle to $230 that it's time for a change. Have done the research, read the posts on here about switching, etc., but yet, I'm anxious/nervous about switchng. Not real techie, have a couple of streaming channels that I got through Amazon, yet still anxious.

Anyway, time to put my big girl pants on and take the plunge. I can do this and figure out how to navigate YT TV. Have watched some YT videos on navigating it for beginners and those helped.

Was anyone else nervous/anxious when they made the switch and the process of switching? Hope there is because I don't want to be the only person feeling this way. LOL

I absolutely HATE Comcast!!!! They R the very worst, bottom of the barrel. Have been a customer for 20+years with tv, internet & mobile. They always, always increase my bill. They won't negotiate anything other than reduce my tv channels or internet speed. I'm a basic user. Nothing fancy.

For me I have kept it because the research I've done where I live, the price isn't enough to justify the PAIN IN THE A____ to do this. I hate electronics, wires, etc. Just hate so I've stayed.

Same with us ... COMCAST does absolutely NOTHING to keep you. We've had them for 26 YEARS... have mostly basic and have bundled other services, but I truly do not want to hassle with streaming, etc. I have too much going on at my job to have to fuss with watching anything automatically when I want to ... I need the calm and easy after a hectic day!

@ Judy L. Yes, Judy, I was nervous as well to cut the cable - Comcast as well. I had dipped my toes in by getting Paramount+ for a particular show. I did mine through Roku. I also got YouTube TV (Plus, I think). It will probably take you a while to get used to navigating the new platform and, if you are anything like me, there will be some features from Comcast you will miss. And bottom line is you can always go back to Comcast if you really don't like streaming. Good Luck!

I may be in the minority here but I would never cut my Comcast cord. Been with them for 40 years, and of course had many ups and downs but it is such an important part of my daily life, my internet, my cable, my land line which I must have, I get free Peacock, free Netflix, I now pay $239, and are there better deals , I am sure there are, but since I am so tech NOT savvy and I can use this and know how to use it, I am keeping it !! I have zero interest in learning a new system or a different way of doing things. I treat myself to so very little in life, I deserve to have this in my home and have the comfort of using it with no anxiety. It is what it is!!!

I considered droppping my Spectrum service because it keeps going up too. However, I use my DVR every day and you can't "tape" with a streaming service, right? If so, I don't know how to do it. So, I try to negotiate a better price and stay with cable so far. Too bad you can't just pay a reasonable amount for the internet.

However, I use my DVR every day and you can't "tape" with a streaming service, right? If so, I don't know how to do it. So, I try to negotiate a better price and stay with cable so far. Too bad you can't just pay a reasonable amount for the internet.

@geegerbee - you can record with YouTube TV but I'm not sure how to do it either. Did watch a tutorial video on it and it seemed awkward to me - like you have to record all the shows for a particular program not just an individual show. I don't record much so didn't pay a whole lot of attention to that part of the tutorial.

Unfortunately, Comcast has now refused to negotiate. They used to. They did last year and gave me a 1 year contract. Was hoping for the same this year but thy wouldn't do it.

dumped spectrum cable and internet and the $206 monthly bill two years ago. Hubby put up an outdoor antenna which gives us our local over the air stations. We have T-Mobile internet for $73/month guaranteed not to increase. We share a sling package with my daughter, our portion $45/month. For a lot less money than our old cable package we have pretty much everything we want and need. FWIW our T-Mobile internet is fast and way more reliable than what we had with spectrum.

@Shelbelle - I so understand how you feel and think that ease of use, lack of stress over learning a new system, etc., has been what's kept me with Comcast for so long and is part of my hesitancy for switching. I also have internet, cable, and landline though Comcast and looked again at the price and it is listed as $239, not the $230 I first thought. Thank you for your response.
