Amazon Prime Hike

My news has reported Amazon is raising it's Prime Member rate $20-$40. This is due to a reported loss last quarter & a raising in shipping costs. I don't use it enough to keep it and I usually order from a third party so it doesn't apply.

I think I am personally responsible for their loss! I pay $80 per year for prime, get free shipping, and therefore order pretty much anything and everything from them instead of making routine trips to CVS or the supermarket. I knew it had to come to an end and that it was too good to be true!

My acct says I have ordered 266 items for Amazon in the last 6 months.

Happy Elizabeth, I order everything from Amazon too. They even ship a less than $5.00 item free.

I know! Last week I ordered a $3 ELF brush and got free shipping. I'm pretty sure the envelope and the shipping cost them more than the brush cost me!

I have more than made up for my Prime membership this month alone. I would still be willing to pay for a cost increase, because I definitely benefit from being a member. Of course, my preference would be that, once increased, it stay at that price indefinitely.

Happy Elizabeth, you don't have to take all the blame, some of it's mine. I do the same as you - anything and everything. Plus, I live in a 3rd floor apartment, so anything heavy that I can get delivered to my door, I do.
It's amazing what I can find on Amazon. Really only need to buy fresh things at the store.

As much as I love Amazon they are a victim of their own success I guess. Undercut everyone including yourself

I have the prime and find myself buying more there due to the membership, not sure where the cutoff to belong would be.

Right now I want to buy bubble mailers because they are at least 50% cheaper than staples and ship free.

Mine just renewed in Dec, so I guess I have until the end of the year. I have to admit that I've ordered more from them in the last year, after signing up for Prime. One thing about it, though, is that it's almost instant gratification, so if you want/need something in a hurry, you can have it quickly though I know that doesn't apply to everything.

Well, the cost of fuel for transportation always goes up & postage stamps went up again, so those costs always get passed on.

Besides, they need the $$ to finance those drone deliveries they think they're going to start using in a couple of years

My renewal isn't due until November. I'm not sure if I'll renew if it goes up. Between the new "Add-on" thing they have done with many of the items I used to order and making many other things not eligible for prime any more, it is becoming les and less of a value.

Plus, they have started shipping some of my Prime items using smart post or sure post, which pretty much guarantees that my two day prime items will take at least a week to arrive. For some strange reason, they aren't taking in to account the delivery time AFTER UPS or FedEx transfers the package to USPS.

I'm not going to pay more money for lower service.

The 'add on' feature for items is really annoying!!! I usually find an alternative of the item that doesn't have that as a stipulation.

One thing I've noticed- the instant videos I watch with Prime... the choices have really diminished. I used to be able to find so much, it was such a valuable perk with Prime. Now everything halfway decent seems to have a minimal charge!

I only signed up for Prime for my kids college books. My youngest is a freshman- so I've got several years to go. If it wasn't for the college thing... I personally never need anything delivered THAT fast. I'm used to waiting - I'm a QVC and HSN customer after all!

My son is a freshman too, he just signed up for his own,the student rate is less. Have a good weekend

My Prime just renewed this week for $79 (plus tax) it is noted in my account that in a year, 1/15, I'll be billed another $79. At least I'm at this rate for this year, I imagine it could go up for 2015 anyhow. I buy as much as possible through Amazon.

I'd pay another $20-$40 to keep Prime. I watch a few videos/movies from them each week. I get a free book to keep each month using the new Kindle First for Prime, I can borrow another book each month. The books they're giving away are typically $5 books so that's $60 worth of books. A Netflix streaming subscription is $7.99 a month or $95.88 a year. I order a lot through Amazon and they keep expanding their offerings and still offer the lowest prices, so it's hard to beat them. If I bought the books and replaced the Prime streaming with Netflix I'd have to pay $155.88 a year. Even at $120 for Prime I'd be coming out ahead.

I scoffed at a $20 to $40 increase when I first heard this yesterday. We order a lot from Amazon, too, and I enjoy my Kindle and streaming video very much. I do not like the "add-on" feature either from a while back. Mine just renewed at $79.

Bottom line, I would probably renew at their increased fee. There's not much to complain about Amazon.

I buy so much from Amazon that the cost of Prime would have to be really outrageous before I would give it up.

I recently ordered several large containers of ice melters - all on Prime. Shipping would have been very high for such heavy items, but with Prime it was nothing.

I read the article & it says Amazon is considering a price hike - it's not a foregone conclusion. Amazon hasn't raised the price from $79 since it was started 9 yrs ago.

I had not heard that this is a done deal, as the OP indicates. Has it come to that at this point?

Mine doesn't renew again until December but if the price goes up I'll probably drop it. I don't use the Prime video anyway because it seems like every time I am looking for something it's not on Prime.

I do, however, order quite a bit and use the shipping greatly. But if the price goes up I'll drop Prime AND will probably order less.

I just went to amazon to turn off the automatic renewal of the prime, and the only option it is giving me is to end the membership. Since I still have 10 months remaining on my current membership, why would I want to end my membership now and forfeit the rest of the year that I have already paid for?

I know there used to be an option there to turn off the automatic renewal...I wonder if they took it away in anticipation of todays news? Or have they hidden the option in some very difficult to locate place?
