Is it bad to keep your laptop always plugged in?

Just saw something that said if you do this, your battery won't last as long. Doesn't make sense to me. Anybody really know?

I've heard the same thing about cellphones. Once it's charged you should unplug it. Something about the lithium battery life.

My husband always leaves his laptop plugged in & never has a problem with it.

I think all rechargeable batteries do better if allowed to run down then be recharged. I've gotten the same advice on everything from computers to my mobility scooter.

I depend on wired cable for reception, so my computer is plugged in.

Yes! The man at the Apple store told me not to leave my laptop charging all night. Let the battery run low, charge it and unplug it.

I have my MacBook plugged into a power strip and I turn the power strip off when I'm done. I'm not as worried about ruining the battery as I am about starting a fire.

My MacBook Pro has been plugged in for 10 years and it's still performing like new when I need to use it without the cord.

The IT folks have all told me the same thing, I have always kept my laptop plugged in and have to say that when we were driving in the camper and it was off the plug it did not last as long as it should have. My husband is one of the people that plugs his phone in every night, he always has, and at this point the battery is rundown in a day-and it is not from over-use.

I have always heard you should not keep your laptops or cell phones plugged in all the time. It is good to have the batteries run down and then recharge them.

I don't have a laptop, but, they told me to let my smartphone battery go low, then charge it!

I researched this recently as I just bought a new laptop. I kept my old laptop plugged in all the time because it was so old and battery wouldn't hold a charge for long unplugged. But I read that leaving it plugged in overheats it and it wears out faster.

According to Lauren Fix, the Car Coach Expert...who knows everything about ALL batteries YES

She just recently did a report that laptops and cell phones should not be excessively over charged.

Both for a fire hazard AND to prolong the battery life.

I trust her reports (you can find her on Youtube and everywhere)

I recently stopped being an 'OVER CHARGER' LOL

Not true. I had an Apple laptop that I always kept,plugged in and it lasted over 7 years with no problems. The only reason I don't have it anymore, is because of the constant updates and I prefer an iPad. The battery was in great shape.

I own an Acer Chromebook and they say it's okay to leave it plugged in all the time. They also said it's the older laptop batteries that get damaged when they are left plugged in. So it just depends on your make/model/year.

I removed the battery from my laptop because it mostly stays on my desk. But I had to replace the battery on another laptop because I kept it plugged in with the battery installed.

I keep my laptop plugged in until I have to move it, then plug back in. No issues here.

@Effie54 It's absolutely true. How could you possibly know how long your battery would last compared to that from a computer that was allowed to drain periodically? I'm sure you felt your battery was in great shape, but compared to what?
