Does anyone have a computer with windows? Seems every time I turn around I have to buy something from Microsoft to keep it running.

That doesn't sound right @crazered. At this point Microsoft is no longer supporting anything older than Windows 10, but you can still use older systems without buying anything.

I was able to upgrade my Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 at no cost.

My PC came with Win10 and then I upgraded it to Win11 for free. I've never had to buy any software to keep my PC running except for an optional antivirus software.

I agree with @PickyPicky3 . You must be using an ancient computer. I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free. I have not been asked to buy anything (unless you mean the Office subscription, which I don't need.)

There are messages from HP to computers that are no longer likely to have replacement parts stating that you may want to look into a newer computer. I think they mean the disc drive computers since the newest ones are all SSD. Mine is a disc drive, and while I love it, the newer ones do run quieter and cooler.

I am still using my old Dell computer with Windows 7, and I ain't bought anything for it, period. Buying from Microsoft? I have bought nothing, and my Dell still does all I need it to do.

What have you paid Microsoft for? There are a zillion scams out there that ask for payment to "fix" a computer.

Are you sure you've been dealing with Microsoft?

Please don't take offense. One of my closest friends is always getting scammed. I have to ask.

John my Windows 7 Dell laptop just bit the dust - almost 14 years old - I bought a new Dell.

I have an HP about 3 or 4 years old, haven't bought a single thing to keep it running, I only paid 200 for it.

What are you buying? I've had this computer for 6 years. Haven't purchased anything at all except a mouse. If this one lasts another 2-3 years, I will buy a new one then.

The internet continues to get more sophisticated that over time the current operating systems and your computer may no longer support it. Then, they must update or come out with something new or you must buy a new computer to keep up with it.

So far, Microsoft is still supporting and updating 10, so you should be OK for some time yet if you are using that. Windows 11 should be around for a long time.

I've had five Windows computers, currently using three of them. Two of them are over nine years old. I have never bought anything for any of them to keep them running.

DH and I have HP desktops and I have an HP laptop. All with MS Windows.

We've never had to pay Microsoft anything to upgrade or to install security and feature updates.

The only thing we pay for each year is the anti-virus software that we choose to use (not MS).

@crazered - Everyone here is telling you that s(he) doesn't have to "buy something from Microsoft to keep it running".

If what you say is true, sounds like your trusted guy has a good thing going, IMO. Or you're being scammed.

iMicrosoft?! Microsoft doesn't use that name ever. You've been scammed. I wonder what else this person has installed on your computer.

Security on a Windows computer never expires. It's always on there because it's part of the Windows operating system, and you don't have to pay extra for it.

If I were you I'd stop using the computer immediately, and find a trusted local expert to clean up the mess. Report the scammer to the feds too.

I have Win 10. Windows Defender is built in. There is no such thing as iMicrosoft.

Don't give this person anymore money and take your computer to reputable tech repair to have your computer wiped.

No one should have remote access to your computer.
