I just got my renewal notice from McAfee and it is $150. I paid $24 for 5 devices for the first year. I did some research and Total AV is rated #1 and they are having a great price right now. Norton is also having a good deal now. Just wondering which one you prefer.

@Pecky ....I am in the same situation. Mc Afee wants $139 from me. I don't have it. Not sure what to do either.

Windows Defender, or whatever it's called now. It's free and gets good reviews. As an added layer of security, I use Windows 10 in S Mode.

There ares several good free ones out there. You might want to check your cable company too--Spectrum has a free anti virus too. Google free antivirus for reviews.

I did some research on my computer and it appears that I already have microsoft security installed and didn't realize it. So to pay for something else would be extra security, but do I really need extra security?

I currently have McAfee on both laptops. One had a subscription which will outlast Windows 10 and the other was for 12 months which will expire mid February.

If I cannot cover both under the one subscription I am thinking of going back to AVG Free. I used this anti virus program many years ago and was very happy with it. I worked for a small company at the time and our IT Manager recommended it.

@ValuSkr @I haven't been using any Windows devices in a long time, so I have not heard of this. What is S Mode?

@Mindy D I think many, or most, new Windows devices today start-up in "S Mode" but you can opt out. If you opt out, you can't go back to S Mode. I think "S" stands for "safe." Basically, S Mode only allows you to install apps from the Microsoft store. In that respect, it's similar, I think, to IOS devices, which only allow apps from the Apple store, and Chromebooks, which only allow apps from the Google Play store. So, it's somewhat restrictive but, to me, it's worth the peace of mind. There may be other aspects of S Mode that I'm not familar with, but this is the main one that's affected me.

S Mode will only work with the MS Edge browser. In other words, S mode is a browser-based feature exclusive to MS Edge. S Mode is like a shoe that only fits Edge but not Chrome or any other browser.

@ValuSkr @I was just looking online about this and MS says that only Defender is compatible with Windows 11 in S Mode.

Using my iPad so much I've forgotten so much about Windows. Thank you for your help.

If you're running Windows 11 they say security is built in. You don't really need an anti virus. I got a good deal on my anti virus because it came pre loaded on my new HP and I paid the promotional price. If you can upgrade to Windows 11 you might not need the anti virus. I still bought it because it was so cheap. After this, however I won't be buying another anti virus. I'll be getting a VPN instead.

I have windows 11 and my computer (desktop) does not load up in S mode. I have no idea what that is @ValuSkr

@gertrudecloset I do have Windows 11. I am thinking of getting TotalAV for $19 for 3 devices. It covers alot. It is a great deal even though it is only for a year.

@gertrudecloset Is your computer new? I think most, or all, new Windows computers - and I mean BRAND NEW - start with Windows 11 in S Mode. If you don't want it, they let you switch out to regular Windows 11. But there's no going back.

It is possible to go back to S Mode but that requires a factory reset and recovery...not exactly something an ordinary person like myself is willing, or knows how, to do.

I'd get rid of the McAfee. Uninstall it, and Windows Security will automatically take over. Since it's part of the operating system, there's nothing to download. Try it and see how you like it. You can always get something else later if you change your mind.

You can turn off the auto-renewal before the expiration if you haven't already done so. Not sure if they advised you of that.

A couple of points here..

1. Becareful because I got an email saying my McAfee was up for renewal but its not. I dont think that came from McAfee I think it was a scam.

2. Those higher prices sound like a 2 year deal with McAfee, thats sounds like what we paid for our current McAfee for 2 year coverage.

Just double check and be sure its the real thing.
