Landline phones

We still have our landline. I hate to give it up but we plan to get rid of spectrum which is cable-phone-internet. Are their other reliable phone only companies out there?

We just got Spectrum and left US Cellular where we could only get spotty coverage.

I missed making an appointment with Minute Clinic because US Cellular wouldn't connect.

With Spectrum, even in mountains, I can get through and connect.

I've had my Ooma (VOIP) phone since 2016 and I love it. The only thing I pay for monthly is the FCC tax which is less than $7 for their Basic service. They also offer a Premier service for $10 monthly and that includes some upgrades. Check out Ooma dot com for more info.

I have not had good luck with Spectrum. We had AT&T for years and Spectrum offered us this wonderful deal if we had basic cable, etc. $29.95/month. Two years ago and it is now $300. The cable goes off and on, the phone will just drop calls and the cable freezes a lot and the internet service can go for a day or two without working. I wish I had AT&T back as it was always dependable. I am told by AT&T that landlines are dinosaurs and they will not be putting any more land lines for economic reasons.

WELL - we noticed over a week ago that we no longer had a dial tone with our landline. We figured the trouble started about August 21.

My husband called Verizon last Monday to request service. Sat on hold for over an hour and still did not talk to anyone. He finally hung up.

Throughout the week the phone does ring once in awhile but no call goes through. Caller ID no longer shows up. And there is LOTS of static on the line.

The good news is we no longer get spam calls so we are in no hurry to get the land line worked on.

We have had static on occasion on the landline during the 40 years we lived here. But we figure since more and more people drop the land line Verizon is in no hurry to fix the line.

So if you want a company where you are unable to talk to anyone about your phone troubles Verizon is the company for you.

My husband tried to get a landline in a cabin up in the mountains. Could not find any company interested in doing the work.

Same here. Verizon is fairly reliable but they have terrible customer service.

@drizzellla Husband - cabin - No service will provide a major installation for a single customer. Gas lines included....and cable TV. Not worth the cost to them to have only one or two paying customers.

We had elec heat until another 100 home were built .....then gas was offered.

If you have a "link to cell" answering system, you can use it with your cell phone when you're in the house.

If you need a separate number just for your home, consider StraightTalk's Home Phone. You buy their reception unit for about $50 and then pay $16/month for service.

We still have a landline. I don't want everyone using my cell phone. I want to have another number to give someone if I need to!

We use Comcast/Xfinity for everything but our cell phones. Both companies have approached us constantly to go with everything and we'll get a special deal. I won't. Years ago Comcast went out in our neighborhood. Everyone had Comcast. We at least could use our cell phones. Our TV, landline, and Internet were out for about a week. Our next door neighbors were stuck because they used Comcast for everything. At least they could use our cell phones!

That was a long time ago, but I can't help thinking it might happen again. I don't want to be without a phone!

Will always keep our landline here" in the sticks"...We have a local phone company.My internet is with them also.

I must say I get pretty good service with my Tracfone..on Verizon...My kids have T-Mobile Cellphones ..when they visit it is hard for them to get service.

The old traditional landlines here (copper wire from Verizon) were too degraded to keep using. Lots of static, poor connections, and just a mess. I gave up on landlines because of that, but you can get better service through Comcast or Verizon's FIOS which is now available. From what I understand, the old copper service used hundreds of very fine copper wires bundled together and the insulation on those wires is failing which degrades signal quality. The phone company couldn't justify the expense of replacing all of the copper, so you were stuck if you stayed with the older technology.

I live in the Philly metro area and have Verizon Fios triple play. Although I have an i phone, I rarely use it and rarely give out the i phone number.

I lost all landline and internet service last week. When the techs came out to check, they found out the copper wiring was bad. However they didn't have any on their truck and it had to be ordered from Omaha (60 miles away). That took another day. (I had already waited three days for the techs to show up the first time!).They arrived on Day #4 just after 1:00 pm and took about 45 minutes to clean out the box outside and install the new wiring. My phones (5) work like new! I didn't realize there had been slight annoying glitches periodically and a few dropped calls over the past year. Guess the four days of silence and no internet was worth it!

But catching up with my email was daunting! Didn't realize how much I receive each day until it piles up unanswered.

ETA: My cell phone is mostly for my use when out and about. Not many people have that number and I seldom receive incoming calls on it. But it certainly had some serious use during those four days with both voice and texting!
