I have two CBs. Is your old one still updating? Like you said CBs do expire. You can check the date of expiration of any CB by going to:

Google Chrome Update Policy

There you will find a list of all makes and models showing their expiration dates. All you need is the model number and that can be found on the underside of your CB. It's the first set of numbers shown just above the upper barcode usually.

Back then I knew nothing about computers ( since he passed I was forced to do things for myself), things would go wrong, I would call him to bale me out! He always said it's you, I never have trouble. Now I have a Samsung Pro Chromebook that I spent a lot of money on ( $500 is a lot for a Chromebook). I hate it, I sent it away to be fixed 2 or 3 times ( the screen can freeze with no warning and you can't shut it down, you have to wait till the battery drains) and they never found anything wrong with it. It's coming to the end of its life span in May of this year ( no more updates). I will NEVER buy another Chromebook.

Chromebooks use multilayers of protection and it is constantly being updated in the background so that the protection remains updated for the current threats. IMHO adding more cyber-protection to your CB is an over-kill so I don't, or never have had it, on either of my CBs.

Do as you feel comfortable with if that gives you peace of mind.. If you think you would feel more secure by adding more anti-virus software then I don't see why not. That's a decision you need to make.

As for the Chromebook, never again. Yes it's easy to use, but like I said I spent a lot of money on it, I could have gotten a decent HP laptop for what I spent on it, it wasn't worth it. Also I have a Garmin GPS ( I have an old car), I couldn't get updates for maps using my Chromebook.
