On 1/7/2014 Cha1k said:
On 1/7/2014 Marybella said:
On 1/6/2014 wildcat fan said: You can keep your AOL email even though you don't use them as a provider. I've been using them for 10 years without any problems even though I cancelled the service. One of the perks for keeping AOL is free MacAfee. If you don't have virus protection, that might be worth keeping. Beware if you go with gmail and you have kids! Our school district's filter blocks gmails, and parents complain all the time about unanswered messages. The reality is that the teachers never received the messages because they're blocked. Lots of local businesses around here block gmails.

Interesting. Why do they block gmail?

I am surprised that a school district would block Gmail, but they may have had a bad experience at some time.

One of the teacher trainers I worked with was a Google Certified educator, so our district uses lots of Google services -- all students have a Google account which includes an email address, access to Google Docs thru the secure district Google account, calendar, Google Drive, etc.

We've asked why they block gmail, and the answer is that it makes the network susceptible to viruses. Our district's IT Director is not a fan of the Google accounts for students. If teachers have a gmail account, they can't access it on campus because it's blocked. Not sure why local businesses block it. . .maybe it's because they're blocking because they've heard the schools are blocking. When I attend technology conferences outside of our district, I hear that many districts have gmail and others are like ours. It's difficult explaining to parents why we never responded to their gmails. We tell them at the beginning of the year that these are difficult to access, but they send them anyway and act like the teachers are avoiding them on purpose.

I have had AOL as my email and internet connection for years, because I needed dial-up. But, now I have a high speed connection and can go with anyone. What are some providers you like and what do they offer in terms of managing your emails?

I recommend going with a web based email such as Gmail instead of one tied to your internet provider. When new internet services come to your community you might be tempted to switch to another provider and if you do so, you email address will change. You then must notify those on your contact list that your address is changing.

Going with web mail from the beginning means that your email address will stay the same not matter who provides your internet service.
