MacBook Pro Slow..Need Help Please

After a Xmas visit from my grandson, my laptop is very slow. Has a hard time connecting to any website through Safari. I can connect faster thru google. I've cleared my history and cache and its no better. He was playing Mindcraft all weekend and downloaded firefox. I also have all kinds of strange files now. So I guess my question is how do I delete files off my mac and delete firefox also. I'm just assuming this is the problem since I've cleared the history etc. Any help or advice appreciated. TIA

Hate to say it but your first mistake was getting an IMAC, they are also not good for gaming- take it to the Apple Store and have them fix it or Best Buy Geek Squad- it is possible you got some kind of a virus from the downloaded game- Good Luck and try HP the next time or even Dell

As far as as this arizona babe, you are very wrong and you should double read posts, mcall1020 owns a Macbook Pro and not the iMac and secondly, you have some very poor intelligence talking about about the brands HP and Dell.

Apple devices are surely the best and friendly gadgets in the market today!

Please go to this page mall1020 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Uninstalling+Firefox and unistall Firefox.

Reboot your Mac, then go /library/application support and find the folder named "mine craft" and put that folder in the Trash (bin).

Reboot your Mac (so you have everything erased from Mac and lastly, open Safari, click Safari (top left), choose Preference, Privacy, then click "Remove All Website Data.

Enjoy your mac now and remember, you are a proud Mac owner!

Dinaki, wow you are a wealth of knowledge....if it is not to much to ask....do you work on computers for a living and how did you gain your knowledge? I have only ever owned Apple computers and love them, I have never had a virus, and they are user friendly, I just wish I knew about the inner workings of computers.

No, I do not work for computers but I do fancy the name Apple. Santa was generous this year for offering me the iPhone 5S and I got it in Gold, love the telephone so much it sits daily on my night stand (hehehe).

I used to be a makeup artist for Lancome but the mall I worked in "bankrupt" and I no longer have found a work. As you can tell, I am good with lipsticks but not under an Apple/computer hood .

For you ladies that perhaps need some assistance with Mac, there's a book called: Beginner's Guide To Mac, it's full of "how to" and illustrations galore.

(I am sorry if I am chopping the English language, I am Greek residing in US)

We are an Apple family and we've never had any problem with any of our devices. Before we left the PC world we were replacing our laptops every other year because of corrupted hard drives. There is nothing like a Mac!!!

Dinaki, I also have a MacBook Pro and have a question regarding the information you listed below. About once a week I go into Privacy and remove website data manually. If I select "Remove all Website Data", will that erase data needed to operate sites I use frequently? I would love to use the remove all. Thanks!

Remember dear and it is good idea that perhaps once per month to click Trash and Empty it.

Hi, Allegheny! I'm obviously not Dinaki but you're completely safe in removing all website data. I do it every time I close my browser (and I do it more than once a day on my iPad).

I have a Macbook Pro, iMac and iPad, don't delete my website data on a regular basis and they run as fast as ever. Letting your grandson use your computer is the problem. He's done something to your machine.

If it was a Windows computer, I'd recommend a system restore. I'm not sure if there is the same option with a Mac.

Actually, passwords saved in the keychain aren't deleted when using "Remove All Website Data."

I clear mine several times a day (I know, that's a lot, but it's my crazy browser housekeeping quirk) and the passwords are intact (that's not where they're stored).

(edited to add for clarity: You can see the stored passwords if you select Safari’s Preferences—>Passwords or open your Keychain Access.)

The Mac computers have the keychain technology on them to store your passwords. Are you using this? If so, then when you clear your websites and cookies, the passwords have already been saved in keychain, and will then show up the next time you go to the site. Keychain is encrypted technology, I feel safe storing my information within it. When you logon to a website for the first time, a pop up will ask if you want to save the info to keychain. I click yes, and all of my info is saved here on my computer. But, make sure you have that set up with admin passwords and stuff. In the event your computer was stolen, you wouldn't want someone to easily gain access to your keychain information. Please read more online about Mac keychain and securing the info within.

It is such a pleasure to post and read here, I have learned so much about my Mac. I do have a couple of books and am aware of Mac basics, but sometimes they just don't give the guidelines I am looking for and I get frustrated. You are welcome. If you are using keychain already, I am sure you have it set up correctly. I just switched to Mac from PC last year, and am amazed with myself on how much I have learned. I would have loved the one on one classes, but like you probably wouldn't have used them. My schedule gets crazy at times. I learned with books, reading online, the apple community site on their website, from posters here, and lastly a UK site that dooBdoo posted called screen casts online. It was $70 for the annual membership, and I probably won't renew, but this guy teaches how to use the Mac and applications online. He has hundreds of videos on his site. He also has lesions for iOS devices, hundreds of them. Watching these videos gave the basics I needed, which really helped when reading books and stuff online about macs and iOS. For free, maclife dot com is an online Mac magazine, and they have a lot of how to videos for both Mac and iOS devices. Love the people here that post, and together we will all learn this technology.

I know a lot of Mac users don't feel the need for maintenance programs, but I started having issues with my MacBook Pro slowing down as well. I have a lot of photos and do a lot of photo editing and such on mine.

I tested something called MacKeeper and decided to buy it (not the deluxe version, just the basic). It wasn't expensive and it is also an anti-virus program as well. I run it about once a month and it deletes all the temp files so many programs create. It can also scan for duplicate files ( a big problem when working with photos, at least for me).

I will have to look,into that mackeeper, buk-I-nana. Does that come with online backup too? I have an external hard drive, and use time machine to back up to that. But I am starting to think what if something happened to my external hard drive (like crashed)? I wouldn't have a back up. I would like to have two backups, one of the external and maybe another online. Or maybe I will just get another external hard drive, and do two backups on two devices often. Haven't decided what approach to take yet.
