IPad Question—-

I've noticed since I got an iPad in June, that if I have it charging while I'm using it, the battery continues to go down. Eventually, I just turn it off. Is this normal??? My iphone doesn't do that. My MacBook Air didn't do that.

@Bridgegal I have an IPad & use it while charging all the time. The battery keeps charging while in use. It goes up not down.
You may want to call Apple c.s. & ask them about it.

I've had an iPad and several Samsung pads. They all charged while I used the, eventually becoming fully charged.

Yes, it's normal. The iPad)s screen uses plenty of juice. I get a longer use when I darken the screen about 20%.

Are you using an Apple certified iPad charger and cable, plugged directly into a wall outlet?

That's going to provide optimum charging.

Also, open your Settings and look under

"Battery" to see what's using up the battery.

In some cases, such things as busy internet activity, watching videos, streaming content, can be so draining that the battery percentage will continue going down or stay constant even when charging.

Other things that can drain the battery...

a very bright screen;

having "Auto-Brightness" disabled;

active Bluetooth;

"Auto-Lock" set to "never";

apps using Background App Refresh or actively running in background;

email accounts that automatically push or fetch;

automatic iCloud syncing or backing up data, pix, apps...

look at all of these.

Any of the things going on automagically in background might be adding to the problem. Think about, and look at, everything that's trying to run simultaneously.

As @NicksmomESQ said, you also can talk with Apple via online chat or by phone to see what they think.

that background app uses up a lot of power, I turn everything off that I don't need and since my Ipad never leaves the house it's everything

It might be the cord that connects the ipad to the electric source. That happened with me. Had to buy a new cord.

I would suspect it to be a charger issue. Most of us have a ton of chargers lying around and tend to plug whatever needs charging into whatever charger is available, and that typically works fine. As long as the plugs match, your device gets charged. Different chargers charge at different rates though. You may find that a different charger will let you use and charge your device simultaneously.

That happens to me occasionally depending on what I'm doing on the iPad. It often happens when it's updating the iOS. I assume at times it's just using a lot of power.

But mine doesn't do that on a constant basis. If I'm just using the iPad for reading and writing in here, for instance, it will continue to charge if it's plugged in.

I'm using the charger that came with it plugged into the white square boxy thing and an extension cord.

ICloud is at the top, along with your Apple ID. Tap that and it will take you to a page that will include a spot to find the Apps that are using and syncing to ICloud. Tap that line and it will show you all your apps that are syncing to ICloud. You can turn off any or all of those. But realize they will no longer be backed up to ICloud either as long as they're off.

Background App Refresh is also in Settings, under the General tab. Tap that, and it will show all your apps that are using the background refresh. Again, you can turn any or all of those off.

I'm not sure about the email push. Notifications, maybe?

ETA: Also in Settings, you can check what is using the battery the most. Tap Battery and it will show you the battery percentage used by each app.

Did you start, as I suggested,

by opening your

Settings

and looking under

"Battery" to see what's using up the battery?

That's going to give you a good overview of battery usage

and a good basic start to detecting and fixing the problem.

Also, I'd still recommend plugging directly into a wall outlet as a test to be sure the extension cord isn't a problem.
eta: You also might try using your iPhone charger and cable to see if the results are better.

My most are: Chrome, Safari, Mail and ESPN. All around 20%.

My fetch is set to 'automatically'.

Unfortunately, your 90 days of tech support most likely has expired. You should have purchased Apple Care to extend it. However, you do need to call Apple Tech Support and find out what's going on.

If I'm charging my iPad, I'm not using it. I would think maybe it's not good for the battery?
