Question for Chromebook owners.

My question is about the 'end of life' policy. So when my chromebook gets to be 5-yo then the Chrome OS no longer will update...that part I understand. Question is: since the OS won't update when it gets 5 yo, does that mean my chromebook becomes vulnerable to cyber attacks or hacks if I continue to use it? ...or does the chromebook become un-usable when it gets that old?

ETA- It's 6.5 years, not 5 for updates to end...and this is not consistent from brand to brand as well as models. It's confusing to say the least.

There is an article related to this on a website called PC World. If you Google "Chromebook support" it will bring up Google Support and also other sites to get info from.

I tried to copy and paste it here but it wont paste. Hope you find some help.

I have a Chromebook...does that mean its no longer usable after 5 years????

Your Chromebook will receive updates for 6.5 years from the date it was brought to market. After 6.5 years then updates will be stopped and your device will no longer be secure and some things might not work right on it because of outdated software.

@SilleeMee Thank you for this post didn't know Chromebooks had an end of life policy. Mine is good up until 2023. But my All in one 23 inch Hp Windows 7 is another thing. No more updates from Microsoft starting Jan 14, 2020. Which is a bummer because it still looks brand new. Should have updated it to Windows 10 when it was free. But the start screen was to confusing

I'm bummed...my Chromebook will end it's life in less than one year. I bought the thing 'used' and at the time I did not know about google's EOL policy for Chromebooks. @cactusgal

Well I didn't know this either. Do you get an alert about your coming up to the end of life for your Chromebook, it's possible you might not remember when you purchased the chromebook?

The google support link I posted upthread shows a list of devices by brand and model with their end dates posted there. Not sure what kind of warning message, if any, will be sent to your device from google when the end time comes close.

If you asked me, I don't think google is very forthcoming about disclosing their EOL policy regarding Chromebooks. To me it seems a bit to-good-to-be-true pricing of Chromebooks in general. But now I know exactly why they cost less than a traditional pc or tablet of equal capabilities. Now that I know how it works, I would think twice before investing in a more expensive Chromebook...especially when I know it has an expiration date.

@SilleeMee , okay thanks. I got my chrome book two years ago, it was a new model. I’m not really in love with my chrome book, I am considering getting another laptop. I have posted that I can’t update my Garmin maps , I’m out of luck. I just checked, my chrome book is good until November 2022.

Oh, you are so right. This is the first time I heard about this eol and now I know why Chromebooks are sold so cheaply. It's a great laptop and I love it. I use if for fun, it's the computer I keep in my room. If I decide to stop using it, no hassle because I have tablets and my principal laptop. I got my money's worth from this Chromebook I am using right now. I don't even see an end of life date on any of the stickers on mine. But apparently per the chart my updates ended last month. I did get an update in June. This eol thing is a huge secret and that just is not fair.

I heard this too on utube. I think they go by the year the CB came out not how and when you brought it. When mine goes I will sell it for parts I guess. I hate this and the thought of maybe going back to windows devices is terrible to me.

Yes, that is what I heard too. And yes to your second question too. I will not use a CB if it is not supported by Chrome OS. [for the reasons you stated] I hope by then something changes for the ChromeOS. Five years is no time at all. That is why I have gotten inexpensive CB. I will not go back to window device. I would just buy a 10 inch tablet with a keyboard and type off that. I am not a happy camper not at all.

You know I was working with CB's since 2015 when they first came out, I prided myself in to believing that I knew everything there is to know about it. I believe this just came out recently, because as much as I love CB's I would have never brought one [even back then] if I knew this would come to pass. This makes no sense to me at all. I feel bad for my stupied in-law that brought the pixlebook for over 1800 last year.
