AOL question

First of all, I am technically challenged. I know how to use my desk top computer but do not have a smart phone (I know, I know, I still have a flip top) do not know what the heck blue tooth is, cloud, etc. and these are things I will eventually have to learn. However, I heard Jill the other night when they were presenting a computer and she was joking with the tech guy that she still has an AOL address and she knows she is dating herself. I still use AOL. Is this something that is not being used anymore? I did not understand why she was saying it is dating her and that no one uses it anymore. Can someone explain this to me? thanks

@lovesallanimals, I didn't know anyone had an aol account. I had one when the internet was dial-up on the phone line. do you still pay them a monthly fee?

I don't know what the fuss is about AOL accounts.

They're completely free if you choose that option, they're pretty reliable, and they have excellent sorting/folder capacities. Easy peasey.

I wish people would stop feeling they have to apologize for things that so-called "mainstream" users don't all use.

Face it; it's considered UNcool to use AOL. Sort of old-fashioned and passe.

I'm also tired of people dissing something because they consider it "uncool" or old technology.

I spent 25 years in I.T. and believe me, I saw a lot of the "new" stuff that was pure junk. My mantra is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

My DH and I have AOL accounts, they're free, they work and I'm not apologizing to anyone for it. I think my ego can suffer the "slings and arrows" of the hipper, wiser young things of the world.

I also have other email accounts, but I will keep my AOL account until they cease to be.

Uncool is in the eyes of the beholder. Too bad they don't know how good AOL actually is! It's much nicer than gmail, for instance. I use both, and have tried others.

LOVE my aol......this 2019 i will have been using it for 20 years.

have several aol email accounts for different purposes.

i rarely have problems and yes, it is free and very user friendly.

i prefer it to gmail and comcast.

have the app installed on my phone also.

I'll tell you what's uncool about AOL. Ever have a problem and have to talk to one of their techs in India? First, you understand only about every 5th word they say. Tell them your problem....eventually it'll occur to you that your tech doesn't know what he or she is doing. After an hour or so, the tech reaches the same conclusion so he just hangs up on you. Then you get to start all over again. I've done this repeatedly over 3 hrs in an evening.

I had an account, could sign on with my password. There was nothing they could do, however, that would allow me to get my email. I called over and over but they couldn't fix it. I gave up and never looked back.

Yes, it's a great service.

I purchased my first computer at Montgomery Wards on January 18, 1994. It was an IBM.

When I brought it home my DH asked me what I was going to do with it. I told him I was going to teach myself to use it....and I did.

There was no Windows back then..there was DOS. I loved it. It was customizable. I cried when Windows came into being.

I went on the internet using Prodigy. It was bought out or merged with AOL and I was forced to switch. I had an e-mail account, but no one I knew of had one, so I couldn't really send too many e-mails.

We didn't even have computers at work yet..just CRT's.

I have had my AOL e-mail account for a long, long time. I have others, but AOL, I supposed, is my favorite. No one is interested in hacking into it for one thing.

It might not be trendy, but I have had it for so long that I prefer it over g-mail and other services. I am not a fan of google at all.

I still have my floppy disk..remember those? AOL version 1.1a. They sent it to me to upgrade my AOL account.

I plan on using my AOL,e-mail as long as I can. I have also noticed that many businesses use AOL e-mail, mostly for security reasons.

I have AOL & I love it ....I have it since 1995 when I bought my first computer & I have never had any problems with it .... 🙃

Count 2 more long term "UNcool" AOL users here, LOL!

Yep, we're "sort of old-fashioned and passe" too!

Never had a problem with AOL mail, so haven't needed to contact their CS in India (where almost every other US company has outsourced their CS to, also).

Therefore, no need for us to "Face it", LOL!

I had a Verizon FIOS e-mail account for a few years. Then they turned over their e-mail service to AOL. I still maintain my original addy, but the e-mail comes through AOL. No problems whatever. I was an AOL user for many years without issue. Very reliable e-mail service for the most part. Passe? Pshaw! If AOL e-mail was good enough for Verizon, then for sure it's good enough for me!

@GingerPeach, I still have an AOL account. I also have a GMail account ( I rarely use). I stick to the AOL account because it's just easier, I have a lot of websites I deal with that have the email address, I don't feel like changing it. When I do give someone my email address, I feel they are judging me and must think I'm over 100 years old!

I got some malware long ago from AOL. It took a while to clean my computer. When I got Comcast internet 19 years ago,I said goodbye AOL.

Today, I use Comcast email and Gmail.

@GingerPeach I kept my AOL because I liked how easy it is to sort things into From/Subject/Date. I use the free online version and a short while after I switched, I cannot use that sort feature. It is stuck on being sorted by date. I liked to click at the top on the FROM so I could delete a large quantity of emails or put the group in a folder. Now when I click at the top of the page one of the From/Subject/Date, it does absolutely nothing and stays on the date sort. Is there a way to make the sorting work on the free version? The sorting feature is what kept me on AOL so long and the fact I can no longer sort is what will make me switch to another internet provider.

I would use what works, and not worry about "cool". I used to pay for my aol account when it first came out, it was the only way to access the internet, in the 1990s. (That and another provider whose name i forgot, prodigy?) I accessed the internet via the phone line, remember that noise? I later switched to msn, and when high speed internet came into being via cable service, I got a different account. We used to have to pay for the aol and msn services, so I cancelled them and said goodbye to them when I stopped paying for them. I don't recall when that was, maybe 20 years ago? So that is why it seems aging. I didn't know there was a "free" AOL service, never heard of it. Who knew?

Hi @lizzys

If you go to AOL's Options, General, Inbox Style, and switch to Unified Inbox, you can get back the sorting option.

I haven't done that yet. What it does it place new mail and old mail together.
