Streaming instead of Cable

We recently moved and opted for Hulu Live TV instead of cable. We have our internet thru Xfinity/Comcast.

We have been happy up until now. We just learned that we have exceded our data plan for December. We didn't even know there was a data cap but sure enough most internet providers have one and if you go over it there is a another charge depending on how much more data you have used. Theirs is $10.00 for every extra 50 MB. That equates to about 15 hours of streaming.

It's hard for me to see how two adults can exceed the amount . We have 2 TV's and two phones and I have a macbook air. DH has a desktop but doesn't use it all that much.

Funny how no one mentioned this data cap when we signed up. And they can't tell us which devices are using what % of the data.

So, for all of you thinking about cutting cable and streaming just know there is a cap and if you go over your cheaper than cable plan just got more expensive.

I ran into something similar with use of the telephone. AT&T signed me up but didn't mention I could only use the phone for 200 minutes per month. I went way over that just calling them about my TV service not working right.

And no, they didn't give me a break because it was them I was talking to.

The next month when I got my BILL, I got them on the phone and told them they were going to change that to unlimited or they could come back out and do an uninstall.

I suppose it depends on your ISP and your plan, but I have no cap on any streaming service. I stream to my heart's content. If I found I was being charged and never advised, I'd be screaming to my state utilities commission.

@Bridgegal, no data limitations here. There are always complaints about the telecom companies though. Promising one thing and changing it without notice and never in your favor. I went without cable for over a year and was quite happy streaming. DH missed sports. The only reason we signed up again was because they gave us a two year deal as good as the price for internet alone. If the price goes up again, we are gone. LM

I have Comcast cable. In my market, they don’t have a cap. This company charges anything they can.. I like a site DSL Reports and their Comcast forum. The folks here talk about issues in the cable industry, price increases, etc.

I have Comcast for internet and cable. I have a cap which I believe is 250 GB of data. While I do stream a lot, I never come close to going over my limit. The posters who claim they don't have a limit may want to check the fine print of their plan. It's not something many cable companies share with you.

I have Xfinity and there is a cap on the service. I never come close, but it is there in the plan. I don’t have cable.

I have my Internet through Comcast and I have a one terabyte cap on usage. According to Comcast I used 500 gb's in November, but only 188 so far in December.

checked my data usage with xfinity for the past six months out of curiosity.

my highest data usage was in october with 768 gb.

we have our internet, tv, and landline phones with xfinity for many years now.

There is a lot of information about data caps online. You should a Google search using words data cap, Comcast,and 2018. You can decide what your next step.

Comcast raises prices every year. The cost of cable will be very high in 2019.

This is a good reminder from @Bridgegal. We all need to be aware of our data caps. I almost exceeded my phone data cap, becauseI did not realize that one of my apps was using my data plan rather than wi-fi.

Yep, that's how many we have. We stream everything since we don't have cable but I still can't figure out how two people can run through all of that in 3 weeks time.

Just curious if you have cable or do you stream TV? It makes a big difference if one is streaming versus cable TV. We stream all of our TV via Hulu live TV.

I do both. I have cable, but I watch a lot of YouTube, Amazon Prime, and more. Most days I stream more than I watch on cable. I also have an antenna for over the air broadcasting.
