Question For those who use a desktop computer

how often do you buy a new desktop computer? I just read something that said most computers today are not built to last more than 5 years.... I thought that seemed awfully short.

We we are replacing our 12 year old HP desktop with a new HP. Our old computer still works just fine, but, we want to replace it before it dies.

I dread switching to Windows 10 from windows 7.....😐

It seems like forced obsolescence. I've been an Apple user for years.The software developers keep making versions that can only be used with the newer operating systems and it really forces you to get a new computer every so many years. I've been here for 17 years and had to buy 2 new computers in that time. I'm currently using an iMac with the Mojave OSX 10.14.2. Hope this is the last one I'll need, but you never know.

I think my Dell desktop is around 8 years old. It works fine and has Windows 7. I'm happy with it.

Why don't you switch to Window 10 while your computer still works? It's a fabulous program! You may decide you don't need a new computer with Windows 10!

Become acquainted with it now, rather than have to learn it AND a new computer also.

I think it's true about the 5-year thing. Technology changes so fast then it seems what happens to the old stuff is it becomes incompatible with the new technology, including outdated software which is why I had to get a new PC. Old software can only be updated to a certain point...then after that you just have to replace it with something new.

I typically get seven to eight years from a desktop before it needs upgrading. I've never had a computer totally die, they just become obsolete. My first desktop had a 100mhz Pentium one CPU with a 1.2 gb hard drive. That was replaced with a 1.5 GHz Celeron CPU with a 40gb hard drive. My next computer was an AMD dual core CPU running at 2.5 GHz with a 320gb hard drive. What I've got now is an AMD six core CPU running at 3.5 GHz with a 1.5 total in hard drive storage. This computer will be two years old come May (or so.)

@BirkiLady I have heard horror stories of people trying to replace 7 with 10 in their older computers. I would rather just buy a computer with it all installed....and our computer. Is 12 years old.....nothing lasts forever even if we wish it would. My car is going on 20 years old😄

My Dell desktop must be 12 yrs old - had to replace the monitor (screen) when it went blank blue. Had it upgraded to windows 10 - hated it at first and still can't do photos to send cuz it's so complicated. Own 3 cameras and w/windows 10 I just gave up. I've never loved #10 but I'm stuck with it and Dell is still working okay. You may hate the new and be sorry you junked the old.

I've got an old Dell that I bought in 2003. It still works somewhat. I can't get online with it anymore because I've got the highest level of Internet Explorer that it will work with and that's not enough to get online. It's an XP operating system, so there's only so many updates I can get.

But, I use it for an old Kodak Photo Printer. Kodak quit on that printer several years ago. They won't do any updates, they want me to buy another printer. I happen to like this one. It prints the photo then it goes through the printer one more time and laminates the photo so it's basically water proof. I can still get the ink/paper combo on Amazon, so as long as I can get that, and my old Dell hangs on, I'll keep my old computer.

I also have another Windows 10 Dell Desktop. It's about 3 years old. The hard drive died in it right after the warranty ran out. I have no need for a 1T hard drive, so I have a smaller drive installed in it.

The newer desktop Dell is much smaller than the old one. I like that because it takes up less space.

Computers cost too much to replace it every time they come up with a different idea. I'll stick with what I have until it dies, or I can't get the browser to update any more.

My old Dell desktop hard drive just recently crashed and burned after about 7-8 years. I also have gone from Windows 7 to 10 (not that impressed). I bought pretty much the same setup I had before (Inspiron), but more powerful. They say laptops aren't built to last past a few years, but I've had my old HP for almost 10 years.

@SeaMaiden I had to switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I HATED it, but now at least I'm getting used to it. I LOVED Windows XP!

Loved my XP and Windows 7. No choice really I have Windows 10 which I am not a fan of. I do use a PC desktop and it was built for me, another story in itself. Young man who built it started to take advantage and I had to find another tech JUST IN CASE.

I am thinking that the PC will be a thing of the past. Most people have gone to Tablets, or Laptops and they are really pretty good. I have no laptop but have several tablets and am happy with them since I can carry them around wherever.

We're getting a new Mac desktop for the office in 2019. We need one there.

One of the worst things you can do if you can afford it is get behind on software updates. You can put it off but it just gets harder and harder to learn the new things and get your data moved along.

Ours is two years old. It won't be long until it will be replaced.

DH is the kind of computer pro that Microsoft calls on occasion. He also discusses mistakes in their manuels with them as well as get dentists out of those $5,000 ransom virus programs.

My iMac 6 going on 7 years old and beginning to show it's age. I need to reset it back to factory condition and see if that helps with the perfromance. If it doesn't, I'll buy a new one. I did a reset on my Macbook and it made a big difference in the performance.

8 year old iMac here. It works well and the OS is still supported. No plans about replacing it right now. Siri, bluetooth, wireless - nice machine. Sleek.

I agree, but very unhappy about it.

There is nothing inherently wrong with an old computer but @SilleeMee hit the nail on the head, suddenly it's incompatible. Support will tell you to download drivers but right now, my old desktop won't recognize my WiFi. But it will, if I download a driver! Yeah, Catch 22.
