@lovesallanimalsI still have a flip phone as well, let's see if I can help you.

You can take photos and videos without wi-fi. I don't know which Fire tablet you are looking at, but if you like to take a lot of photos and videos, you may want to get an SD micro card so you have more memory. Videos take up more memory than photos. You cannot search the web without wi-fi though. Anytime you get onto the web you have got to have some type of connection to an internet service. Since there is no hard connection on the tablet, it must use wi-fi.

@lovesallanimals, this is what google says...

Answer: The fire edition generally works as all kindles, as soon you download a book/song you can read/listen without wifi - but you need the connection for the downloading part. Many games also can be played without internet connection - but again - the connection is needed for the downloading.

Bottom line is you need wifi to download items and and use the internet. If there is a camera function, you can use it without the internet but you will not be able to post photos online. HTH. LM

Also, some games require an occasional WiFi connection (once every few months or so) in order to be playable. You can play them in between connections, but they need to be validated every so often. It's something annoying I discovered during the five months I had no WiFi.

Just a note for you flip phone owners. When you finally get a smart phone, it'll blow your mind all you can do with it. My cheap little LG Premiere Pro ($89.99 with a years service when I bought it) is a mini-computer for accessing the net from nearly anywhere, phone, camcorder, digital still camera, radio, digital assistant, calendar, timer, clock, flashlight, WiFi hotspot, FM radio, portable gaming unit, and more, all in one tiny little package.

You'll be amazed at how you ever got along without one once you get your hands on a smartphone. And they're really inexpensive these days. (Or they can be anyway.) You'll find yourself using it more and more and wonder why you waited so long to join the revolution. I never have to look for a timer, camera, clock, or flashlight these days. It's there with me hiding in my phone. If I'm out someplace where there's no WiFi and I need to use my tablet for something a quick flick, a couple of taps, and my phone turns into a hotspot using its data to feed the tablet. I made the switch from a flip phone about four years ago, and boy am I glad I did. I was always one of those "I don't need all of that" people, but it turns out I did and I just didn't realize it.

My kids have told me a hundred times but they've given up. The only thing I would like in a phone is a garmin. However, I've decided if I don't know how to get somewhere then I'm just not going. lol

The GPS is very handy. I use Google Maps and it's a real time saver. It takes me on some pretty scenic routes that I'd never try otherwise, but it gets me where I need to be in a timely fashion, so I can't complain. I had a recent doctor visit up in Blackwood NJ and I'd likely still be looking for the place without the GPS. There were three largely unlabeled traffic circles you had to traverse and Google Maps led me to the right place. (Well, it was off by a couple of hundred yards, but close enough.) There are times you have to get someplace new and having a GPS can be very handy. I've now given up my home phone due to the nonstop telemarketers and even if one calls my smartphone, it's right with me, so I don't have to run to it to find out its Rachel from cardholder services.

I'll even use Google maps when I know where I'm going. Sometimes it wants me to take a different route and it's kind of fun to see it replotting the route as I go. I have a doctor in Glassboro I see and the easiest way for me to get there is to take 295 to the 322 exit and follow 322 to Glassboro. Google Maps really wants me to take the Turnpike instead. I wonder sometimes if the app designers don't get a kickback from the Turnpike authority as even when I take the 322 exit, it'll want me to u-turn and go back to the Turnpike. It'll finally accept my decision once I get on 322 and adjusts the timing accordingly from 44 minutes to u-turn back to the Turnpike to the 26 minutes it takes on 322.

I'd changed the setting one day to avoid toll routes and it decided a trip across the bridge to New Castle, Delaware (which is about a twenty minute trip for me) would take well over two hours as they had me go way, way up north to avoid the toll bridges. Yeah, it's not the smartest GPS in the world, but it works.

Thanks everyone for all our feedback. I use my home computer for everything but my wi-fi is not turned on and I have no problem. I ordered the TSV tablet but think I will return it as I only wanted it for photos and video, too big to lug around to check the internet when I want to. So I think I will cave and get a smart phone as I can use it for everything. Dont play games, facebook, etc. and would not watch movies or tv shows on this as I do not travel and watch everything on my TV or home computer. I have to catch up with the times, I know, so I will look into the smart phones.

One time a couple of years ago I drove by myself out of town (only about 40 min) to a graduation party. I printed off driving directions from google or mapquest or one of those and hung it with scotch tape to my dashboard. That didn't work too good. Every time I came to an intersection and looked to check if I needed to make a turn I couldn't find my place on the hanging page. All in all though I only had to stop once and ask for help so that wasn't too bad. Coming back home in the dark someone led me down all the side roads back onto 95. Going there it was still light out or I'd still be on the missing person posters.
