iOS 12 and battery life

I installed iOS 12 the day it came out on my iPhone 6 and two iPads. Installation went fine.

Boy have I noticed a substantial decrease in battery life on both my phone and the iPad. Especially on my phone. Even in sleep mode, overnight, the battery drains quite a bit.

Anyne else notice a decrease in battery life since installing the newest iOS?

I’ve tried closing apps and nothing seems to help.

Hi!

Well, I was reading about IOS 12 last Monday and yes, it is a problem with IOS 12, which I wished I had never installed.

Have not installed IOS 12 on phone yet.

I BELIEVE IOS 12.1 MIGHT correct the battery problem, but I will look this up to verify and I will copy the article’s link here.

@LTT1- thanks! All these updates usually go fine for me and this one did, but boy the battery life....

On my phone, on sleep mode overnight, mine easily decreases by 12-15% every night. I don’t know on the iPad because I charge it overnight every night.

This article may present some help. I hope so. I use my phone rarely, and keep it on the charger at night, so do not notice about battery life.

There is a new update available, 12.1, which the article references.

The battery life issue with the update is why I have not updated any of my Apple products. I just push the later button when they try to force me to install the update. I have the 6 plus and an older model Gen 2 IPad and they work fine without the update!

I'm the opposite...i do all the updates on my iPhone. Just did the 12.0 update. I'm not ready to update the new operating system for my laptop, however. I'll probably wait a good while before I do that one.

I just updated to 12.0.1.

If nothing else, saner heads prevailed and they moved the 123 button on the keyboard back to the original position.

Here is another factoid that may or may not be important to anyone...

‘In the midst of the release of IOS 12, my iPad was at the “APPLE HOSPITAL” getting a new screen (mine was cracked)

So, they sent me an entirely new IPad Pro!

Which came with nothing on it so I was starting over and didn’t take the time to look up the new IOS 12 and find out about it.

Hmmmm.... my photo button for FaceTime is GONE and that’s a fact. 😰

@gidgetgh, I have iPhone 6+. I agree about new updates using up battery life. I don’t have high phone use normally. When I first got my iPhone, a charge lasted at least 2 days. Now, not much more than a day.

In settings, it shows my battery at 98%. The guy at the Apple Store told me I could get a new battery still at the reduced price til the end of the year but that I would notice little difference in performance.

Anyone believe that or are they discouraging replacement to sell new phones? Not a cynic by nature but this wouldn’t be the first time they did something like this. LM

Normally I would think that too.

When we went into Verizon, fully intent upon getting a battery at the reduced price for my 6+, the salesman GAVE me a new iPhone 8+!

I am enjoying it.

The article I referenced and read (previous post below) said that it takes from 24-48 hours after installing a new update for the device to finish reorganizing all of the prior data.

I haven’t had any issues on my devices, although I don’t have my 6+ anymore I did update it to iOS 12 before I got my XS max. In fact my 6+ was running much better since ios12 that it was on iOS 11.x

FYI, the Apple person also told me that a phone is considered defunct or past it’s prime at 80%.

My iPhone 6+ Was my first iPhone. I have to say, it has served me very well and more than paid for itself. I will probably replace it in 2019 (can’t believe how close it is!). Awaiting delivery of Apple Watch 4 right now. LM

@LTT1, if you click Settings, scroll down and click Battery, click Battery Health, it will show you a percentage which is the measure of capacity relative to when your phone was new.

Mine is at 98% which is very good. The staff at Apple consider 80% to be indicative of the need for a new battery (or a new phone I guess).

They also told me that they can do other diagnostics to look at battery health.

My watch is due to arrive the first week of November, a 5 week delay from order date. I will come back and review once I have used it for awhile. LM

I just checked the battery health on my phone (didn’t know you could do this) and it says 98%

I tried to do it on my iPad, but battery health isn’t listed under battery.

I just checked my battery health and it says 97%. I haven't downloaded 12 yet though. I have had my phone about 9 months and barely use it. It seems to have to be charged quite often.

I have found that everytime you put a new IOS update on an "older" iPhone you end up with decreased performance. As with computers the older they are the less ability they have to actually keep up with changes. Some IOS updates are worse than others. Some IOS updates reverse settings that you already had in place on your phone to improve its battery life. Its all part of Apple's evil plot to convince you to get a new phone.

@proudlyfromNJ @gidgetgh, mine phone is almost five years old (iPhone 6+). Battery at 98%. I use it for online activity much more than as a phone. I actually hate talking long on the phone. LM
