I take the SD card out of the camera and insert it into the SC card reader on the side of the computer. I also connect my iPhone via cable and it will transfer using either iPhoto or Photos.

if you use/have icloud storage of photos you don't need to connect anything. The photos automatically show up on all of the apple devices.

In addition to what blondegirl stated, Dropbox does the same thing.
