topic Stolen Apple Laptop in Electronics

This morning, my friend went to work - and her husband was home alone using his Apple Laptop, which was on the kitchen table. He then went upstairs for 15 minutes - and when he came down, the computer was gone. They've had problems with the people in the house behind theirs - and my friend is sure they're the ones who stole it. From the neighbor's windows (2 story homes); they were able to see that her husband was upstairs in his bedroom - and the downstairs slider was open. It's a guy in his 20's or 30s - and we're sure he climbed over the wood fence into their backyard - opened the slider, stole the laptop - and left out the front door - which was found open (it had been locked). Or he could have just handed the computer over the fence to one of his family members and left thru the front door. The police were called.

There was no tracking device on the computer. Is there anything Apple could do? Is it just a total loss. There was so much personal information on the computer.
