My hubby switched to consumer cellular a while ago for his cell phone. I was a holdout and with AT&T. Had been with them since they were Cingular Wireless. So when he was able to get phone service in the St.Lawrence River and I was not, I switched. Then to follow, I decided to make a switch to them for a land line. Oy Vey, what a mistake. What they don't tell you is that you will be without phone service on your land line for 7-10 days. Yes, you read that correctly. According to them, due to the fact it is more difficult to port a land line number than a cell phone number, it can take that long. IMHO, to take my advice, the cell service is good. They are not yet ready for prime time with the land lines.

I think land lines are going to become a thing of the past. That's probably not where they are concentrating on service. I have consumer cellular now for my cell and I like it. It was hard for me to give up my verizon but my bill is seriously half of what it was with verizon for the same exact services. What's not to love?

LindaSal - You sound like us. We were also with Verizon And my husband could not stand the fact our Verizon bill kept going up and up. So about 3 years ago we switched to Consumer Cellular. Our bills were cut in half and I think our service is even better than Verizon.

Verizon used to drop calls on certain areas of my commute. I have never had a dropped call with Consumer Cellular.

Now we do not have Consurmer Cellular for our land line only our cell phones. Sorry you are having trouble, Deanie.

I had the $10-monthly basic Consumer Cellular cell service for about four or five years. I only used it for emergency. Just recently I dropped them for the ATT once-yearly purchase, no-contract cell service. With ATT I get minutes included with my payment whereas the CCell only provided me with service and NO minutes. I had to pay extra if I used CCell to make calls which cost me 35 cents a minute. With ATT I get approx 30 minutes a month included in the $99/year purchase.

I use Ooma VoIP phone service instead of a landline. I only pay the FCC tax monthly which amounts to about $5 per month. I also got to keep my old landline number when I signed up for Ooma. I had to pay a one-time porting fee of $40 and it took about 3 days for it to switch over to the Ooma service.

We've had Consumer Cellular for years and love it (much lower monthly payments than Verizon, still great service). We recently bought their landline equipment, got a new phone number, hooked it up and it worked immediately. Not sure why yours took 7 to 10 days unless you opted to keep your old number. But that seems like a small inconvenience up front. I'm glad we don't have our landline through our cable company anymore. And I like having a landline.

Wow. Good to know many are as happy with the cell service as we are now. I believe the issue with the amount of time it has been taking is due to the fact we kept the old number and Comcast has a death grip on it. Comcast's bill for the Internet and land line went up to 150 dollars a month. Can you believe that? That was the impetus of the switch. And, I must say, with the switch to CC as a provider for the cell phones, that too, has been cut in half. What is it with these companies and their bills?

I had Consumer Cellular. I use a cell phone rarely except if I'm traveling. One month they automatically bumped me up to a different plan based on my one time usage. If I wanted my original plan, I would have to call them and request it. I immediately dropped Consumer Cellular. I now have an AT&T plan and am much happier with it.

As far as landlines, I have AT&T and pay a lot of money for it but I will not change it for VOIP which I found to be unreliable.

VoIP phone service is only as good as your internet connection. In my case, I have the fastest, most reliable type connection which is fiber optic wifi. It is not available everywhere. My internet speed clocks in at nearly 80mbps(upload). Most DSL speeds are about 20 or less...on a good day.

I don't believe landlines will ever go away. Some people rely on them for their Lifeline service. Although Lifeline services are available in a wi-fi version, it is not an option for low-income and Medicaid patients right now.
