Another scam call..... Oy vay!

I got a call from a 914 area code . Which is in several counties of upstate NY, My sister lives in Yonkers so I picked up the phone and a man with a accent starts talking about Microsoft giving me a refund? What? I said I do not have a computer and hung up on him. Just a heads up that they are now using area codes in my area they can use it in yours. I wish there were something that can be done about these people.

I used to get so many of that call now I got a call blocker and I never hear my home phone ring at all. Also, have a call blocker on my cell phone. These people now use area code and local numbers to keep calling you.

Scam calls have been doing this for a year or more. My area code - even the name of a familiar close by town or village near me (some 7 miles away) shows on the caller ID. Even a couple where I was calling myself. My phone # -my name.

and not pick up any calls from numbers they don't know

The scammers have figured out a way to get into my work phone system- all numbers start with the same 3 digit extension. So yes, oy vey! I've become very good at hanging up the phone with little regard ....

I do use my voice mail but, I was expecting a call so I just picked it up. They are getting better and better at what they do and that is not good. Just my public service announcement for folks out there that are not aware of this. Thanks for your replies.

If someone does answer, the scammers do their best to intimidate and scare you. I get a lot of calls too. 99 % of the time I let an answering machine take the call Occasionally though, because i am expecting a certain call, I do answer the phone. The latest scam tried to scare by saying "the license on your computer has expired." Of course most of these calls are aimed at the elderly. All the scammers want is a credit card number. They have no integrity or morals at all.

You have to be careful what you say when you answer.

When I get a call like this, when I am expecting a call, I don't say hello.

I'll answer and listen first.

Yesterday I got my first "Grandma" scam call. I have heard about it, but not experienced it.

The caller started out with "Hi Grandma", but I knew it was not his voice. I said we had a bad connection and I couldn't understand him, so please repeat. "It's your oldest Grandson",

I asked "Which one?"

This confused the caller since he didn't know how to answer. He hung up on me! Oh well.

I only have one phone that shows the caller number. When we move later this year I will get new phones.

They are not to be calling a business as it is illegal - I would think in all states. I always answer with a business name and ask how I can direct their call and is it a customer or vendor calling. That always throws them off and they say sorry, I'll remove this number from my list. This has cut way down on the number of these calls.

Maybe they are not supposed to call businesses, but that does not seem to matter. I am on a state and federal "do not call" list and that does not matter to the scammers. They still call.

I purchased the CPR call blocker from QVC just before Christmas. It is one of by best purchase ever not just on QVC

I was on the DoNotCall list...forget it...then my cable company recommend RoboCall (free) and it did work somewhat better than being on the do not call list.

The call blocker has 5000 pre programmed #s and I have never had to listen again to Rachael from Card Services. Then any calls that come through I just hit the "block now" button and I never see that # again. It also has a feature that you can go through the calls you may have missed (you were out etc) and block those also. If you make a mistake and block a number by mistake you can fix that easily Now we only get a few calls in a month if you can afford it, and annoying calls bother you, don't hesitate

You see, there is a "Do Not Call List" courtesy of your "ever-benevolent" federal goivernment. Made everyone feel good. That is until it was found to be a useless as a $3 bill.

We have an answering machine on our land line. We don't pick up calls on that unless we know who's calling.

Unfortunately, the scammers have been able start calling cell phone numbers AND have been able to tinker with the system so that a call may look like its coming from someone in your area code. When that happens, we listen for a few seconds and then hang up unless we recognize the call.

I suspect that there's little that can be done to stop these calls.

Yeah, we've been preaching that here for years, eh? Nobody listens.

Granted, the OP here thought it could be her daughter, or daughter-related, so I could understand answering.

But 99.9% of the time it's pretty obvious that a call from an unknown # is some sort of scam deal. People keep answering the phone (not referring to OP here) and we can thank them for having a big part in this being such a successful endeavor.

Even if you answer and hang up, or play some of the silly games some play (why?), you are contributing because you have validated your number for their sell list. Part of how they make money is selling actual, validated, numbers to other scammers. This is a HUGE business.

It's frustrating, to say the least.

Yea! I had a great one the the other day. My computer was sending 'em messages and it needed them! Loved all 25 minutes of it. after about 20 minutes the one(terrible english) passed me on to his boss.

She could speak better english and tried to take me a different route to their goal. She ruined my fun after only 5 minutes. First started by raising her voice a little at at time. Not long after she was almost yelling, she asked me "are you playing me"? Imagine that!

I, still being very polite, said "I thought that was the point of this game, you playing me and me playing you"! Next thing I heard was the dial tone. Dang it, and me just getting warmed up. Ah! The fun I have with these computer needs help calls. I don't even put ''' on our "block list".

I applaud your persistence in perpetrating your own scam on them!!

My brother answers speaking German. That confounds many too.
