Adobe flash?

I am using a genealogy website that keeps prompting me to install Adobe Flash on my MacBook Pro.

when I go to preferences it says my flash is up to date.

I'm confused. any suggestions or advice?

Please do not install it

Plus always remember to install any updates from the the Apple Store or in this case, directly from Adobe.

no way, @Dinaki. I learned my lesson the hard way on my old computer about installing programs from pop-ups or prompts. but, I'm just confused about why this site keeps telling me I need to install Adobe when I already have it and it's up to date.

You need to go into your browser(s) Preferences to set up how the browser handles "pop-ups." Also, you need to start using Adblock Plus or some other ad/spam blockers. You can get them from the App Store.

From my personal experience, Safari does a very poor job of blocking spam pop-ups compared to other browsers.

from what I remember apple and adobe don't play well together

Jobs hated it for some reason

I had the very same thing just a couple of nights ago on Ancestry, and I'm using Chrome on an emachines computer that is several years old. I knew my Flash player was up to date also.

Same thing happens to me using IE and I just ignore it. It's annoying though.

I never install anything that pops up. If I need it, I go directly to the legitimate site.

Firefox knows you have Adobe Flash, but it's asking you to activate it. The browser disables it so you can activate it only on sites you trust. If you look at the setting in your add-ons, you'll see it's set to Ask to Activate. This page explains. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/set-adobe-flash-click-play-firefox

which anti-virus/spam program do you like? I went to the app store and looked at those with the most/highest ratings. some were free and some were not. I installed Dr. Antivirus (free) and now it's alerting me that 2 potential viruses have been detected and I must upgrade to clean them. now I'm wondering if I should have just purchased one of the other paid programs instead. there are so many. is this one of those "you get what you pay for" deals?

any recommendations for a trusted program?

I came back here to comment that tonight I had another of those annoying "update Adobe flashplayer" pop-ups. Next thing I know, my Norton antivirus alerted me that it had blocked it, because it was a "Heuristic virus".

I've always known that it was a con, but it's nice to know my virus software is taking care of it.

Again, any info I have is from “school days.”

If you need Adobe flash but already have it, you can go into the computer settings portion and prompt it to suppress messages.

We use Symantec (Norton) and I used to see that problem when I used Windows but DH no longer gets those messages?
