Tivo or Tablo?

I've never heard of Tablo. I am Team TiVo since September 2005. I have purchased all 3 of mine from TiVo.com. My original was free with a 2 year subscription. My Premier was a refurbished model, and it was free with a 2 year subscription. My Bolt 500mb was a pre-release order ($199 and it included one year of service which is I think $19.99 a month, so it was basically free).

Easy to install, easy to use. I only had one problem with my new TiVo Bolt and they replaced it for free even though it was out of warranty. They also replaced my remote last month even though it was out of warranty because it was doing funky things.

I love the product and the company as they stand by their stuff.

I've had Tivos for about 14 years and I wouldn't want to be without them. I am currently running two Bolts. These are my third series. None of the prior ones died - Two Series 2 machines that I used for several years but technology exceeded their effectiveness for my use. Then I used two Series 4 machines for several years but got sukked in by the Bolts and ended up replacing both of those with Bolts (Series 6) for features. My Series 4 machines (Premieres) still work just fine. Should probably look to sell them since they both have Lifetime.

As for the Tivo Bolts - three of my favorite features are 1) Skip Mode (skip through commercial segments in a hot second, but not all channels/shows have this); 2) Quick Mode - for some shows I watch they move painfully slowly and quick mode is this magical thing that speeds it up by 30%. You can't even tell unless it's people who talk super fast; 3) internal wireless adapter. I have a home network and for either viewing content of one machine through the other, or transferring shows, streaming from Netflix or Amazon, etc, it's a lot more efficient.

Tivo is going through some issues right now with having a different guide data provider than they had for years but it's mostly still good. I guess there is worse out there.

The features of Tivo are just so much more than anything you'll get from a generic DVR provided by the cable or satellite company that I cannot imagine a time when I change from Tivo.

I've never heard of Tablo either, but love Tivo. I've had three Tivos over the years and like Chickenbutt, have never had one die. I've just upgraded. I highly recommend Tivo.

Thank you everyone! Very helpful to my husband and me. We called Best Buy and asked what they sold for recording with an antenna and Tablo & Tivo were the 2 names they gave us. I had never heard of the first one either.

I will write when we make our choice and if it's Tablo I will let you know how it works for us.

YOu might want to dig through some of the reviews on Amazon (1600+), which usually has the most reviews and most comprehensive reviews.

We did and the one that worried me the most was how hot the box got and even smelled like melting plastic. Yikes, don't want that.

@Jackhound Mom My first TiVo Bolt last year ran very hot. It eventually had a hardward failure and TiVo replaced it for me even though it was outside of warranty.

My new Bolt is warm, but not toasty hot like the first one.

Oh dear, that's concerning for sure! One of the worst things for electronics can be overheating. I make every attempt to make sure my electronics stay cool.

With all of my previous Tivos, and I know this sounds silly but it gave me comfort, was the I put a water bottle cap under each corner to raise it up off the surface. I didn't really need to because they were never stacked or put in a place that would be hot (Plus I keep my house fairly cool as I hate the heat). I just liked knowing that there could be air circulation all the way around them. They always stayed cool.

But with the Bolts, I didn't feel inclined to do that because of their curved shape. I think that was a good idea, even though of all the Tivos I've had before have never had heat problems.

I put my laptops on steel mesh laptop stands, too. I can have a laptop on all day and it doesn't even get warm. Keeping electronics cool, and barring unexpected problems, will give you many years of use.
