MacBook Pro ... Jumping Cursor

I have been doing more documents lately. The cursor, in the middle of typing, positions itself on another line in text previously typed. Has anyone else had this happen?

I made an appointment at the store for next week. LM

Hi, @Lilysmom. I had a jumping cursor on an early 2011 MBP (I no longer use it, since I spilled liquid on it and killed it). It happened a few times, that when I was using it, the trackpad would go haywire.

It seemed to resolve and I had many happy years without no recurrence.

Mine's been doing that for some time. I thought I was pressing the wrong key causing it to happen. Please post back with the answer you get from the techs.

And I thought that jumping cursor was one of the signs my 5-year old Dell laptop was over the hill.

By the way, when I called my favorite techie for advice, his advice was not to waste my money trying service on this laptop - just buy new. That didn't surprise me, but his recommendation to stick with Dell sort of did. Haven't decided yet what I'm doing, but in the meantime, I'm getting a few more months with that cursor occasionally acting up. Today, it's being good.

@millieshops @glb613 @Sweetbay magnolia @TeriK, sorry I am so long to respond.

My MacBook Pro is less than a year old. I haven't used it much for documents but have recently been doing committee work resulting in increased word processing. I googled the error and some say it might be a bad battery.

It is so annoying. I don't watch the screen when I am typing so, if you don't catch it, your document text is a mess.

My appointment is next week which is within the warranty period so I hope to get it resolved at that appointment. I will post back after my appointment.

That sounds like a delay when typing, which is usually caused by programs running in the backgound that are using up RAM. When was the last time you completely powered off your mac?

That's not a problem with my Macbook and the cursor will move to a different line without doing anything.

That's not a problem with my Macbook and the cursor will move to a different line without doing anything.

@jaxs mom @glb613, that's definitely not the problem. My MacBook Pro is powered down every night. LM

PS, I get this is an issue though @jaxs mom. It happens quite a bit with my iphone which is on all the time. I have to remind myself to power it down.

@Mz iMac, thank you for the link. It's so good of you to share. The only thing that might help is starting up in safe mode. I have never done that. I have had the problem since I bought the computer. I should have done something sooner. Thankfully, it is still under warranty. Will advise how my appointment goes Monday. LM

Please do. It happened to me yesterday. I don't use the trackpad, I use a mouse. I don't have baggy sleeves which might brush the trackpad. I shutdown my Macbook every night. It hasn't alway been a problem but lately, it happens everytime I type something. It doesn't matter what program I'm using. I'll look up and I'm typing in the middle of the previous sentence. So annoying!

Did this start after the last update? It could be related to that if it did. Does it occur across multiple programs (e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets) or is the problem confined to just one program? If it occurs across multiple programs that implies it's more of a systemic issue, either OS or hardware. If it only occurs with one program then it's likely an issue with that software only.

I was at Apple's website and saw the new iMac which is coming out in December. Wow, it is nice. Of course there was no price listed. I'm just about ready to format my current iMac and buy a new one. Unlike a lot of people, I use my desktop most of the time and prefer it to my notebook computer or iPad. Thanks for the information.

Wow! That's a pricey repair. I'm glad yours is still under warranty. I pretty much rebuilt my computer this year (new motherboard, 8 gb's ram, six core CPU, ssd, and a new OS) for a bit over $400.

When you go to pick up your MBP make sure it is working to your satisfaction BEFORE you leave the Apple Store.

Also, I strongly suggest that you purchase AppleCare for an extra 3 yrs of coverage/warranty BEFORE your standard 1 yr warranty is up. Better yet, see if the AS can give you a deal and/or you negotiate one regarding the cost of AppleCare for your "inconvenience."
