Is there a program that will defrag the hard drive in my iMac? Is it necessary? I've been doing some purging and have removed thousands of photos. It's close to 10,000 photos and I wonder if defraging the hard drive would help performance.

I'm sure you've already done a Google search on this subject, but if not, there's a lot of information as to whether it's necessary to defrag a Mac.

Is it necessary? No. Apple's OS includes defragging that the system does automatically a bit at a time each and every day. Give it a week or two and the whole hard drive will have been defragged with you doing nothing. If you absolutely have to have it defragged today, you can buy software that will do the job for you, but the OS will do it automatically over time.
