Switching from iOS to Android

About to switch from iOS to Android for my phone. Those of you who have done this, how long before you knew what you were doing and felt comfortable?

I know there are apps to transfer your data, but if you’re doing a trade-in at time of purchase, you wouldn’t be able to do that, right? Not crucial for me because I have an iPad with the same info, but just wondering.

I went from an iPad to a Samsung Tablet. It took me about 2 minutes to adjust. I see very few differences. I think too much is made of the differences in the systems. You use the Play Store rather than the App Store to get your apps.. that's about it.

Thanks, @Kachina624. I have used an Android tablet in the very distant past, and I have a Fire (which I should use more and don’t), so I’m vaguely familiar, just have never used many apps. I’ll have to take note of which apps I’ll need to look for in the Google Play store.

My biggest problem is going to be figuring out a relatively simple way to transfer the photos I’ll take on the Android phone to my iPad. The odd photo here and there no biggie, but 10+ photos gets to be PITA.

I am getting excited, though.

I’m not talking about transferring the photos on my iPhone to the Android phone. I’m saying, when I start taking photos with the Android phone, how to get them onto my iPad.

I was given an android as a gift. I gave it a good try, but i never adjusted. My iOS device, old as it is, is still more comfortable for me. The two systms just have a different underlying mindset or something.

I’m not talking about transferring the photos on my iPhone to the Android phone. I’m saying, when I start taking photos with the Android phone, how to get them onto my iPad.

Android phones give you the option to automatically back up your photos to the Google cloud. You can then simply go to https://photos.google.com and all of your photos will be there (after you sign in) and can either just be viewed from the cloud, or downloaded to any device you want them on. If you have family around the country you can share your Google password with them and they can view all of your photos whenever they like. (Just be careful what you shoot as sometimes photos upload before you get a chance to delete them.)

As to adjusting to Android after using IOS, I never really see the problem. There are icons on the screen, you tap the icons and the app launches. The apps generally work the same way. Unless you're constantly deep inside the operating system and manipulating files, you won't really see any difference. People who say the Android system is so much more complicated confuse the heck out of me. Unless they have an IOS system that reads their mind and does what they want without them having to even touch the phone, there's no real difference. You tap and go. It's not rocket science.

Sorry, I miss read your post. There is a "camera connection kit" you can buy for your iPad. Plug in the one with a USB connection on one end. Plug in your phone and the transfer should begin. At least that's what happens when I connect my iPhone to my iPad.

I’m very comfortable with iOS, but not wedded to it. I love my iPad to bits, but am done with top prices for iPhones for technology Android has had already. And there are constraints that don’t thrill me.

Anyone - when you use a message app in Android, are there any issues receiving texts on an iPhone? Do you have a favorite Android app for messaging? The people I text with/send photos to have iPhones.

When I bought my connection kit years ago, it came with 2 connections. One is for a SD card and the other is for a USB. If you don't have one for a USB connection, then you'll need to buy one. I know you can use the cloud for storage but, Apple's isn't free. I also didn't want to use Wifi to transfer 1200+ photos I took while on my latest vacation. As I'm sure you know, never store the only copy of your photos on your phone.

So far, so good - if draining! Phone went on sale at 9 pm last night. Verizon website slammed because they were debuting one phone and taking pre-orders for others. I tried for at least 2 hrs to get a bloody phone ordered to p/u, including talking to a rep via chat. FINALLY got it ordered to p/u, no thanks to the laggy, buggy website.

Got two text messages with two different order #s and was afraid I’d get charged for two phones. Speaking on phone with Verizon wasn’t all that reassuring. I finally figured out that one number was an internal website place-holding # and the second was the store’s order #. Guh.

At the store, I insisted on them helping me set it up and making sure I could get online & make & receive calls; they had planned on just handing me the box with the phone in it and waving buh-byee. Heck no. Good thing, because the store rep ended up having to call Verizon CS and activating the phone using the serial & etc #’s on the box. Rep said I should not have had to mess with that.

I think (fingers crossed) that my reception will be okay. I called my cell from the house phone VOIP and it didn’t drop & sounded fine. Will have to keep testing the next few days.

I’ve got it more or less set up (except not with the BT in my car yet - the battery was too low & I had to get it charged up, which it is now). I followed the phone’s online manual, but am going to have to buy an Android for Dummies book I think because it does so many things and I won’t use half of them unless I read up. I’ve got the basics covered, I hope. I wanted to wait a few days to be sure I’m keeping it before I personalize it too much and do security and insurance.

Am having trouble remembering/finding how to get back Home, and realizing that my lock screen isn’t my home screen, as it was on the iPhone. More exploring tomorrow and more picture-taking.

@glb613, I uploaded 700 photos from the iPhone to the Verizon Cloud and my Contacts and it only took an hour. In the store it only took about 15-20 min to download it to the new phone with their faster wifi. I might be able to get by with just an app to transfer future photos from the phone to the iPad. Will try that first anyway. The store rep said they’ve had people come in with 7,000 photos to transfer!

Fingers crossed it will all work out. It’s fast, light & takes gorgeous photos.

You don't get read receipts when texting between the two operating systems. That's the one thing I find annoying. Everyone else I text with also has an iphone, except one person has an android and I never know if they've recieved the texts or not.

You don't get read receipts when texting between the two operating systems. That's the one thing I find annoying. Everyone else I text with also has an iphone, except one person has an android and I never know if they've recieved the texts or not.

@jaxs mom, I had never set up receipts on the iPhone,(didn’t know there was such a thing) so I won’t miss that. I’m cool with “Delivered.” I do, however, want to know it works. Will try it out tonight.

Yeah, Google unveiled their new Pixel 2 Phone recently and it's very, very popular already. That's why Verizon was getting slammed with orders and pre-orders. The fight between Apple and Google over the best phone seems to be a draw this time around based on the early reviews. Some prefer the Pixel 2 some prefer the iPhone.

@Moonchilde I always use whatever messenger app that was installed on my phone (messanging - green) but I have installed "messenger" (blud).

As far as receiving texts from iPhone user, the only thing that comes to mind is did you turn off your iMessage on your iPhone?

For photos, install "Google Photos" and/or "Google Drive" on your iPad. On your phone have it automatically synced/backup under settings on your Google Photo app.

Some things that may be useful:

Google Play: go to settings and make sure all the defaults is the way you want it (i.e., I don't allow apps to automatically install).

Camera: go to settings where you want your photos stored (i.e., device or SD card)

Music/Movies: go to settings and pick your downloaded preference (device or SD card)

Wifi: check the settings to see if you want your phone to automatically search for open wifi (I have this turned off since I only connect to my home wifi).

I recommend Inbox (IMO better than preinstalled gmail app).

Setup your "Do Not Disturb".

To take screenshots: press power and volume down simultaneously.

LOL - I never read manuals... when something comes up I google it (much more pleasurable for me).

@gardenman, I bought the LG V30, based on specs and early hands-on reports from tech, but mostly because of the photos. OMG, the photo quality! 😍 So far have only taken photos of my celebratory sangria and my cat (not in the same location, lol) and am blown away. I enjoyed the camera on my iPhone 6S and thought it was “as good as I’ll ever need” (since I also use my Canon long zoom p&s camera a lot) but *this* - big difference! I’m a Photoshop Express compulsive user, but with this phone I’ll need it much, much less and in many cases not at all.

I’ll go out and take more today and download more apps. I have to be sure I get reception at home - #1 biggest importance because zero reception is the reason I’m ditching the iPhone. So far so good. I’ve made & received short calls - don’t have a lot of people to try it out on ;-( and Yelp even works at the house - never on the iPhone.

One text I sent last night never made it (to another phone in the same house) - “failed” notice on their phone - but one did. Both apps were on the phone already. Message+ didn’t work but Messaging did (I think). I did download Messenger and haven’t sent anything but was able to read a message in FB.

Gestures and other things (screen shots, etc) will take time before they become second nature. Many things I’ll have to do a lot before I’m as natively fast/comfortable as I was on the iPhone & my iPad - but I’ll ge there.
