Just a heads up.........

I got a pop up on my Ipad which said my files were being protected and I could not go on line or do anything until I call this number.. they left a number which I did not call instead got on my other device and found out how to remove this pop up. went into settings erased my history and the pop up was gone. When I was on line I found out these people call themselves the PC techs and that they work for Apple they made it appear that they were protecting me and they wanted 149 dollars to take it off. So, I just thought to pass this along to those who do not know about this latest scam. They claim they are removing several virus. I did however report this to APPLE.

@apple1964 Thanks for the heads-up. By the way, I was just trying to respond to your post about the hurricane and request for prayers, and "poof"....your thread disappeared before my very eyes!!!!

I know having probems again wlith Jumping pages... they really should fix this website once and for all. I will try again... and thank you.

On the rare occasions I've gotten a pop up claiming that I have a virus on my IOS devices I just completely power it down and then back up and it's gone.

Hi, @apple1964! I'm glad you mentioned this. It shows up now and then, and it's good for everyone to be aware.

These nasty popups originate from various websites and they usually freeze up the browser so it's not usable until we go to the settings and clear history, cookies, and website data to allow the browser to start fresh. Exactly what you did. With the Safari browser on an iPad, it works best to close the apps running in background, then go to Settings-->Safari. Then choose "Clear History and Website Data" and tap "Clear" on the popup. Then, tap "Advanced" at the bottom of that same screen, choose "Website Data" and choose "Remove All Website Data" and tap "Remove" on the popup.

The last time I got a ransom type virus on my IPad, Research suggested going into settings and switching on airplane mode. I tried it and it worked !

Hi, @Azcowgirl! I think, probably, what you saw were instructions to first switch to airplane mode to disable the connection (cellular or Wi-Fi) and then clear Safari history and data. Although, if the first step was all you needed, that's great!

The initial problem, usually, is that the popup freezes the browser on the iPad and essentially locks up the entire device. So, first we have to find a way to free it up. Various methods, such as shutting down the iPad (as @jaxs mom mentioned), or double-tapping the home button and swiping away the browser app, or moving to airplane mode to disable the connection... can break the "lock" the popup has on the iPad. But with some of these diabolical popups, the browser history and/or stored data will cause the same freeze-up to happen as soon as we relaunch the browser -- that's why it can help to clear those things out before resuming activity online.

It all depends on the type of popup we encounter and also which browser we use. I think we might even see slight differences with older iOS versions. That's why all the brainstorming and suggestions are so helpful -- we have multiple options, so if one doesn't do the trick another one will.

Thanks for the infor. Had them a couple of times on my iMac. Had to force shut down to get rid of them.
