Don't forget to check other retailers around the same time, they will have back to school offers, too. Most of the time you'll do better with them. Most of the "value" on those TSV computers are all the extra programs you really won't use anyway. Plus, some local dealers stand behind what they sell longer than QVC does.

Check the sale ads you get either online or in the newspaper and see what's on sale. Before I switched to Apple, I used HP computers and was very pleased.

You may want to look at an HP Envy at the company site. You can find reviews at Notebookcheck.net, and YouTube.

The "Envy" brand name has been around a long time.

There are major differences in the $700 and a $1050 products.

Please try to find the spec data sheet for any product you want to purchase.

You need to look at photos of the products.

I use laptops only and I've never purchased a refurb. But, here's the thing - if I were to consider that sort of thing with any electronic I would make sure that it's a 'factory refurb' as opposed to something refurbed by who knows who. That just always seemed like good sense to me. If the manufacturer is selling it, it's probably a factory refurb. But if any other retailer is selling it, you might not know by what means it was refurbed.

Furthermore, I also avoid buying computers from shopping networks. You can do so much better elsewhere and get more for your money.

With PCs (I only have PCs - no apple computers, NTTAWWT) I go for an Intel i7 processor (current version) and make sure there is plenty of RAM that is also current version RAM. They all have plenty of hard drive these days so that's not so much a concern. But I'm not a fan of the AMD processors either and prefer Intel. An i5 is ok, but an i7 is way better.

An Ethernet port in case wireless is not available because of a battery problem. A DVD drive as I use mine for my exercise tapes or music and also a number keypad on the right as typing across the top is time consuming. I made a list of what I wanted and compare my list with what I am thinking of buying. Still trying to decide on a 15" or a 17" laptop. Holding off to see if the newest computers will have the newest Windows 10 Creator's version already installed or. I don't have to update theOs myself. Less problems if preinstalled to me.

As for updates, of course, it's going to have in it whatever was current at the time of the build. I've always had updates to install in any new computer. But that's the easy stuff.

It's going to have Windows10. There will probably be updates to install, though. Personally, I don't like Win10 because of the amount of control they take away from the user. That is just irksome for me because, if I have purchased the license for this given machine, I think that I should be able to continue having more control, short of doing anything to hurt the OS of course. Every time there is an update I cringe, wondering what program it is going to corrupt (or kill) next.

Mine have all had ethernet ports, although I never use them, and DVD drive also. But I've been hearing lately that DVD drives aren't in laptops as much as they used to be. I was surprised by that. All of mine have had them and I use them, mostly for installing programs that I have on hand.
