Windows 10.....

Well, the night before last my computer did some updating as I was shutting it down. OK, no problem. Next day, power up as usual and get a notification that my updates were ready to be installed.

Took forever to update to the Windows 10 Creator's Version. This is supposed to be the most up to date (with safety patches and other features) for now. My machine restarted about three times during the installation.

Give yourself two hours on not using your windows computer when you do upgrade. If you've got two hours or more to spare go ahead and download it yourself if you can. Microsoft is rolling it out over time, but you can get it sooner.

@itiswhatitis Are there significant differences between Windows 10 and Windows 10 Creator's Version? I am not sure I want this "upgrade" and have no idea if I "must" have it.

I haven't been thrilled with the need to pay for this every year either, but I guess I am in the minority on that too.

I still prefer WIndows XP...guess that also makes me "old and resistant to change."

Yeah, my computer also updated to the Creator's Version" a few weeks ago and it was fairly time consuming. I'm also confused about the paying for it every year, unless you're talking about some of the apps that can be subscribed to. In most cases you can still buy things like Office, or similar programs at full price if you'd prefer over the yearly charge for renting them.

Mine updated several weeks ago and I actually find that my system runs better with my internet. Weird, I know. Before the update, I had the hardest time getting onto my internet with Windows 10. Now, I am getting on and running fine. There's been a few additional updates too since I installed an they didn't take as long as the inital update.

I remember my laptop updating for about two hours after I shut down. [a few days ago] I am going to check both my computers to see if that new update installed or not? Thanks O/P for starting this thread. I think my next computer will be a Mac. Tired of Microsoft and there updates already.

My laptop forced Windows 10 on me and hijacked some of the free things I used to be able to do on it. Ruined an expensive laptop so that I won't use it unless I have to. Microsoft CS told me I could purchase their apps now and then I'd be able to use those features again. No thanks.

My laptop is always updating and never gives me a chance to approve of the updates or refuse them. I'm shopping for my first MacBook because of Microsoft's aggressive & unwelcome behavior. I can't wait to be done with Microsoft once and for all.

@apple1964 @willdob3 sorry to be the bearer of bad news but both PC's and MACs update their software from time to time. You won't bypass updates with MAC's.....

I read a little about it before I installed it and the #1 point made everywhere was "this update will take a long time to install."

So I was prepared for the install time.

I read about all the updates the pros and cons. None of them applie

The apps run better. That's about all I see for me.

Mine didn't take that long (less than an hour for sure), but it was probably the biggest. But the computer I have with Win10 isn't old and it's pretty fast (i7 processor, plenty o RAM, etc).

It's a shame that I don't like Win10 at all because that laptop, my newest one that was original with Win10 (I learned a long time ago and will never upgrade the OS of a computer to a new OS), is a really nice laptop and I love the laptop. But win10 just ticks me off.

Consequently, I don't use that one very much. I'm on a 8.1 computer now and also have two Win7 computers that are in great operating shape. I'll continue with those until 2020 when the OS is no longer supported.

With this latest Win10 update I was worried about some of my programs as it seems that almost every time there is an update it either corrupts or totally kills at least one of my programs. This time it broke one but I was able to re-install it. Whew! That's not always the case. I had a couple of programs that I was never able to re-install on that computer.

Of course they update. I'm not concerned about Apple products doing anything like what Microsoft does. If they did, no one would want to use them & there would be little benefit to switching. Forced updates are just one reason I'm switching. The list of reasons not to use Microsoft products is long and well-known. I'm not making an uneducated decision.

Plenty of people have had problems after Apple updates. I had games that wouldn't run after an update. Whether it's a Windows or Apple computer, usually it's older programs that are effected.

My laptop was new. Things that got messed up should have been fine. The only solution Microsoft offered was to pay them more money. The things that are wrong with Microsoft that concern me are not problems with Apple.

You could have reset or restored your computer to the way it was out of the box and not pay Microsoft a dime. Did you do that?

You could have reset or restored your computer to the way it was out of the box and not pay Microsoft a dime. Did you do that?

You don't get it. What they did and are doing and will continue to do is on purpose. To make money. I'm not talking about little glitches. Things like that I can fix. And not something fixed with a restore. I'm done. I'm moving on.

My comment about Apple is based on my experience with and around them. MAC OS does update and so does Microsoft. Granted Microsoft's updates are more offten and are to fix patches and problems found within the OS most times. Windows 10 doesn't cost a penny if you're running an older version of the OS on your computer. They gave everyone a chance to upgrade to Windows 10. There will be no new Operating Systems for anyone to purchase anymore from Windows. Windows 10 is it. The updates are free.

If you require a new computer today or tomorrow it will come loaded with Windows 10 as it's operating system. No more Windows XP, Windows 7 (I had this) Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

I agree with you, @apple1964 and @willdob3. I've worked with Apple and Microsoft devices since the 1980s, and I was pleased when I could move solely to Apple. Of course they have updates, but they're so relatively trouble-free and so different from Microsoft updates they probably shouldn't both be called the same thing since that invites comparison. It's really two different "animals."

I use Apple computers and mobile devices, and have done so for a long time. iPads and iPhones, and desktops. For certain, some people run into problems after updates, but relatively few do and the issues are simpler and easier to fix in the vast majority of cases. If we were to run a comparison of the percentage of Apple users with problems to the percentage of users of other devices, it would be clear which one is more trouble-free. As someone who not only has experience as a user but also as IT support, I know which systems have more frequent problems and also present with more complex problems. And, of course, Apple devices are safer from attack... not perfect, not completely safe, and we have to keep a watchful eye... but still safer.
