Very easy to do. As long as the disc drive isn't what failed, you shouyld be able to move or copy the file(s) you are concerned about. HOWEVER, doing this is most likely going to void the warrenty/prevent return for credit. Also, simply deleting a file doesn't necessarily prevent someone with the right level of skills from retrieving the file. I would assume this would be the same in the case of a file that was moved to another drive. There are people who make big bucks by retrieving info from damaged or reformatted hard drives.

I purchased a Dell laptop Inspiron 15 from HSN two weeks ago. I have used Toshiba laptops for a very long time, but this sale came along and I went for it.

I set the laptop up and used it for one week. This morning I was downloading some Dell software and the laptop froze up. I tried to do a hard reset, removed the battery, etc. Nothing. I called Dell support and once again went through all the same steps with the agent. ****** thing won't even turn on. Dell wants me to send it to their designated depot for repair. I have very pertinent information loaded into the new laptop and do not want the information exposed to a random technician.

I tried calling HSN customer service, but there is a three hour wait to speak with one of their agents. I guess I'm between a rock and a hard place. I'm on a call back list with HSN, just want to relay all that information to them.

Yikes!

Send an email to them or do a Live Chat online. I like an online chat as you can type back and forth to the HSN Customer Service Agent. I have always

had excellent results from this. I hate waiting more than 5 minutes and do the Live Chat instead. Sign in and hit Live Chat. Wait until an agent says her name and ask you what you need. Type in your response and hit enter and wait for their response. I hope this helps.

I would assume this would be the same in the case of a file that was moved to another drive. There are people who make big bucks by retrieving info from damaged or reformatted hard drives.

Good info, @juperier and @Mz iMac, but that doesn't solve OP's concern that the laptop needs tech help, but she doesn't want the tech helper to access some files. The issue is not a backup issue

@nomless I completely understand. If it's the hard drive that has failed and it's user replaceble, she can do that and try to obtain a disc with the operating system on it from Dell (or purchase a new disc from Microsoft at full price), then hope there are no more problems. But if it's some other part that's failed (or just a connection that came loose), all replacing the drive going to do is void the warrenty (opening the case typically voids the warrenty).

Mantaraye, I just decided to look at any reviews/posts that might be relevant to my problem with my new Dell Inspiron 15! And there you were...same thing. This brand new (ordered 4.1.17/delivered 4.17.17) PC has crashed on me every time I've turned it on and tried to set it up (about 4 times). It's supposed to be soooo super fast (not) and great for multi-tasking even when you have 9 more apps running on it etc. So I appreciate your post and the answers people have offered (except the ones related to "backing it up" of course lol). One question though, is HSN the same as QVC?

Send it back. Check the return policy ASAP. You normally get 30 days.
