CAN'T OPEN PROGRAMS

Tonight I couldn't open any browser or use my computer other than accessing the icon page. I ran all my security last night and it was clean. I did go on youtube to look at some office downloads and what they have and that's about all I did out of the ordinary. I can't take it back by system restore cause I can't get beyond the start icon. I just get an hourglass. I did check to make sure it wasn't my mouse and it's not. Any suggestions?

My computer says that it isn't shutting down completely. I did run Malwarebytes and it was clean. I tried to do a system restore but I couldn't create a date. I tried the date of the last restore but it wasn't successful. I did get an error Oxc000007b whatever that is. I can assess my photo gallery in safe mode and have to get them out. As far as the other things I can live with not getting them. I did have Avast in it but notice that the icon is missing from the toolbar. If I can get into programs I'll check to see if it's still listed. I did check it Saturday night and it was fine, did a defrag and malware and everything was fine. It turned off Saturday night as usual.

My new computer is on it's way. Would still like to see if I can fix this since it's a backup and like to learn how to do things. I thought maybe hardware. I do have a disc to reinstall Windows but wonder if that would help. Never had to do it on this computer.

@kismet, I'm so sorry you're having these major problems with the device. I'm little or no help with Windows-based PCs, but we have many posters who are experts, and I hope some of them will chime in with assistance.

This problem may have been caused by a program.
I would do nothing now, but backup my files etc.

Hi @kismet,

I looked up your error message, and from what I can see, it indicates that it's a problem with Windows 7.

I think that it would help us out though anyway, if you could just let us know the next time that you need help, if you could tell us what kind of computer you need help with.

For example, what the model of the computer is that you're using, what browser you're using, is it a laptop or a tablet, and so on.

I don't want to unintentionally post anything that may not be helpful to you, by making any assumptions about what you're using.

Based on what you posted though, I will post a link here from the Bleeping Computers website.

It's a step-by-step article on getting into Safe Mode in Windows, where you can try fixing some things from there with your computer, if you are willing to do that.

You can get into Safe Mode by restarting your computer, and as it restarts, press the F8 key rapidly, in order to bring it up.

When you are successful in getting into Safe Mode, you'll see a black computer screen with white lettering on it.

You can then decide what you want to do to your computer, while in Safe Mode.

I have used Safe Mode before myself, when trying to repair my own Windows computer, back when I was still using Vista.

Thanks to everyone that suggested a fix. The problem I have is that i can't use my mouse to do anything on the computer. I can't go into it to put an address in it to run a fix. I did run a diagnostic today and it said that I have error 2000-0333 which can be caused by an improper shut down plus other things and my computer says the shut down was not complete the other day. I always shut my computer down by going to shut down and not using the button to turn it off.

I have tried the safe mode and sometimes I will get the black page and most times not. When i do get it that's when I try a system restore. I usually create a date prior to the problem and there was nothing I could create. I then tried my last manual restore date and that didn't work. I haven't been able to get the black page today. I did notice the Avast icon is gone on the toolbar. Was hoping I could get into my programs to see if it's still there but can't get that far on the computer. I sure am tired of that hourglass. Using my husband's computer.

A friend of mine knows I ordered a new computer and said she thinks that my computer is broken hearted since I ordered a new one to replace it. Maybe I should have placed my order on a different computer. Gave me a laugh. I got this Dell in 2007 and I can honestly say it has been excellent compared to problems others have had. Never had to take it in for repairs and I knew nothing about computers. Have gotten a lot of help here from knowledgable and kind people.

My computer should be delieverd on Friday. Then it's a whole new ballgame with Windows 10. Feel like I'm starting at square one all over again.

nutmeg3, thanks for the information above. I have Vista but did look at the above sites. I wasn't aware that I could use my disk to reboot Vista. I think that may be the best thing to do. I did do some research and if I could use my mouse I think I may be able to figure it out. If not, there is a good repair place not too far from me and the ratings are good on it. If I have to I may take it down for a quote. Not sure I can get my pictures out of it at this point. Still there when I was able to get into the photo gallery. I'm sure I'll enjoy the new computer when I figure it out.

I apologize that I didn't specify in my last post that I wasn't talking about doing a System Restore on your computer, but rather that when you're in Safe Mode, trying something else, like a repair with it.

In the article/tutorial link that I posted, it lists another way to get into Safe Mode if you can't get in using the F8 key, but if your mouse isn't always working, then you might have a problem because you may not be able to click in a search box/bar on some radio buttons that you might need in order to make some choices for Safe Mode, either.

However, if you can get back into Safe Mode through F8, and you want to try something else again, you should be able to try a repair selection using the Arrow keys on your keyboard and the Enter key.

When you click on a repair option, the computer will try and repair itself. It will scan for any problem files. It's programmed to do this.

You can look in the article/tutorial, and it will show you what the options are in Safe Mode, once you get into it. You'll see what is on the screen for the other choices.

It's just a suggestion, if you're willing to give it a try again.

My old Vista finally quit last year after 7 and a half years, so to get 7 years out of yours is a good, long time, too!

Ours had a major hardware failure problem with it, and it just finally stopped working altogether.

Toppers3, I did go into what your describing. On some I needed to click on yes or no and I had no mouse. I did call two computer repair shops and the estimates to check it was low. Said if i have a disk after repairs that they would reinstall Vista. I do have the disk. I think it's worth a try to see what the repairs would cost. I liked the idea of a backup computer. I have gone to places on this computer that I never thought I would go. I still have a desktop computer with something from 2000, I think, but it's not hooked up for wireless. It still worked when I got my laptop and that was 7 years old. Only keeping it because my daughter wants to do something with her pictures.

It sounds like you gave it your best, trying to get your old computer to work, and if you have a low estimate on getting it reformatted again, I would go for it, too.

I would have done the same thing. I'm nothing if not tenacious, trying to get something to work again.

My husband calls me "stubborn." I just say, "Nah, I'm not stubborn, I'm just determined!"

You can get your photos out of your computer then, and then have it for back-up, like you plan on doing.

Toppers 3, I got my computer today but haven't set it up yet. I have to run the manual off on my printer and assume I don't have enough paper. I have to say that it seems to have things hidden on it compared to my old one. The keys seem to be so much flatter than this one and think it will take time to learn on that one. I had the same problem with my old one. I prefer the elevated keys like on the old typewriters.

I don't feel I'm stubborn but other have said different. If I misplace something I can't rest until I find it. Over time I've gotten more laid back about the computer but it use to bother me years ago.

I forgot that I had all my puppy pictures in my email. The breeder had computer trouble and she asked if I had them and I sent all I had and left them in my email. So I'm going to transfer them to my husband's photo gallery and then put them in the new computer and then take my computer in. He was born in another state and I picked him out from his pictures. I had already gotten a puppy from this breeder and lost her at 16. We waited for puppies from her dog again since they are just so well tempered. It was an 8 hour drive in one day but he is so worth it.

I really hope that you enjoy using your new computer.

There are always online tutorials too, in case you need help. Don't forget to check YouTube.

You can always bookmark the computer's owner's manual to your favorites in your browser, if you don't feel like printing it out.

That's what I do, when I want to refer back to something without printing out the whole thing. I did that with our new printer's manual that was online.

I understand about typing on the keys...

It took me awhile to get used to typing on my Chromebook.

I was so used to typing on a keyboard that comes with a desktop computer set-up, where the keys were more elevated, too.

Now I'm used to the flatter keys with the Chromebook.

That's such a sweet story about your breeder and your dog and the puppies.
